Eine genaue Antwort auf diese Frage, eine klare Definition des Begriffs Popliteratur ist nicht einfach, denn "den zentralen Komplex, die Kategorie nach der sich alles ordnet, wird man für den Pop&Literatur-Komplex vergeblich suchen." (Ullmaier 2001: 11). Schon Leslie A. Fiedler betonte in seinem Aufsatz "Cross the Border - Close the Gap" von 1969: ´Pop schillert. Pop fließt. Pop lässt sich nicht festlegen und überschreitet Grenzen´ (vgl. Goer 2003: 172). Es zeigt sich, dass Pop(-literatur) eine längere Entwicklung hinter sich hat, sich in ständiger Transformation befindet und im Bezug auf den historischen und/oder nationalen Kontext unterschiedliche Interpretationen erfährt. Thomas Meinecke, Schriftsteller, DJ und Bandmitglied von F.S.K., ist schon durch seine Person prädestiniert, ein Autor von Popliteratur zu sein. Hinzu kommt eine ausgeprägte Repräsentanz von Musik in seinen Büchern. Doch Meinecke kann noch mehr. So geht es in seinen Romanen auch immer um Gender-Fragen, Cultural Studies oder postkoloniale Theorie. Ebenso in Hellblau, das in vielen Fällen auch als ´postkoloniale Literatur´ bezeichnet wird (vgl. Gunia 2002: 208; Messmer 2001; Schumacher 2003: 186). Trotzdem wird das Buch im Kontext des Suhrkamp-Marketings als ´Pop´ deklariert und Meinecke in wissenschaftlichen wie journalistischen Texten als Popliterat, obwohl sich seine Literatur von dem, was allgemein als ´Pop´ verkauft wird, unterscheidet. Besonders durch seine Art des Schreibens, dem ´DJ-Stil´, hebt er sich von anderen Autoren der Popliteratur ab. Ist Hellblau nun Popliteratur oder eine postkoloniale Studie?
