Excerpt from Report From the South Mississippi Branch Experiment Station for 1921

In 1919 a number of plats of land as nearly uniform in composition and as level as we could find were set aside for permanent work with fertilizers under cotton and corn. The arrangement of these plats so as to insure maximum accuracy of results is described in detail in bulletin No. 194 of this Station. As mentioned in this bulletin, at the end of 1919 we decided to devote all of these plats to work with cotton alone as there had always been such a seeming lack of uniformity to all our work with fertilizers under corn. So, in 1920 all work with fertilizers under cotton on said plats was done in duplicate and were so reported in this bulletin No. 194 under series A and B.

Series A was on land a little lower than Series B, and in years past had received some washing from it, but in the beginning of our work a broad, shallow ditch was run between the two series so as to prevent any further washing. Reference to the work of 1920 will show that the average acre yield of all plats fertilized and unfertilized, on series A was 147 pounds more of seed cotton than that of series B, this to give a general idea of the natural fertility of the plats of land and to show more accurately the effects of lime applied later to one of the series.' In February 1921 series A was limed with natural lime rock bought from the state penitentiary plant at Waynesboro. This was weighed separately for each plat and distributed by hand so as to insure uniformity of application to the twenty-eight plats. A little later all plats on series A and B were fertilized exactly as they had been in 1920 except in 1921 we used cottonseed meal instead of calcium cyanamid as a source of nitrogen. Series B was, of course, left unlimed, but in every other respect the two series were given exactly the same treatment. They were fertilized at the same time, exactly in duplicate, prepared, planted, hoed and cultivated at the same time and each received three applica tions of calcium arsenate at intervals of five days beginning July 16. In fact, while there was a broad ditch between the two series, it was shallow enough to permit of crossing with all implements and cultivation was continuous between the two series.
