Angulo fait preuve d'une habileté consommée pour tisser une intrigue policière qui maintient le lecteur en haleine. Chaque scène est parfaitement construite pour augmenter la tension dramatique. Les dialogues coulent avec naturel, révélant des vérités plus profondes sur les personnages. La description des décors est vivante et nous donne l'impression d'y être.

Mais ce roman va au-delà du genre policier. C'est une exploration psychologique de la nature de la justice, du désir humain de vengeance, des limites de la loi et du dilemme moral entre le bien et le mal.

Le vétéran détective Harry Swank est un personnage magistralement ciselé. Nous voyons le monde à travers ses yeux fatigués, son esprit tourmenté par de sombres souvenirs et sa lutte pour rendre justice dans un monde de plus en plus chaotique. Swank est obsédé par la résolution du mystérieux meurtre d'une fillette survenu des décennies plus tôt, une quête qui le pousse à la limite de ses forces et de sa santé mentale.

Angulo nous fait partager la frustration de Swank face au système juridique et son sentiment grandissant d'impuissance. Nous partageons aussi ses douleurs physiques, car le passage implacable du temps a ravagé son corps. Et par-dessus tout, nous partageons son humanité, ses démons intérieurs, ses doutes existentiels. Swank est un anti-héros dans le plus pur style des tragiques personnages de Shakespeare.

Les thèmes abordés dans "Le Renifleur" sont universels: la justice, la culpabilité, le désir de vengeance, la rédemption. Angulo nous invite à regarder en nous-mêmes et à nous demander jusqu'où nous sommes prêts à aller au nom de la justice, à quel point nous sommes disposés à sacrifier. Il nous pousse à réfléchir sur la mince ligne morale qui sépare la justice de la vengeance.

Le titre du roman, "Le Renifleur", prend des significations multiples tout au long de l'intrigue. Il fait référence à un nouveau dispositif technologique capable de "renifler" des particules microscopiques du passé et de reconstruire les faits tels qu'ils se sont déroulés. Mais il fait aussi allusion à cette qualité innée du détective de suivre la piste de la vérité, de "flairer" où le coupable se cache. Et enfin, il est lié au don de Swank pour détecter le mal qui niche au plus profond de l'âme humaine.

La prose d'Angulo est chargée de lyrisme. Elle foisonne de descriptions évocatrices et de réflexions poétiques sur la fugacité de la vie et la complexité de la psyché humaine. Son style alerte nous plonge dans l'action hallucinante de l'intrigue, puis nous permet de nous élever et de contempler l'histoire dans une perspective plus large et universelle.
