About the Book

Jesus starts off by informing the Jews that unless their righteousness surpasses the Pharisees and the Scribes that they will not enter heaven. He says, "You have heard that it was said..." However, he challenges the teachers of that day by saying, "But I say to you..." Jesus goes down a list of sins the religious community was justifying. One of those sins was adultery. Jesus says, if you look at a woman in lust you commit adultery in your heart. Jesus was not talking to virgins who were lusting after other virgins. But Jesus was addressing those who would violate the marriage covenant if they acted on the lust of their heart. Next, Jesus addresses those who commit adultery by divorce and remarriage. Jewish leaders were saying it is ok to divorce your spouse for any reason (Matthew 19:3) as long as you give her a bill of divorce. The Jewish leaders were justifying divorce by the permission slip for women to remarry. We know historically the certificate allowed the women to remarry. Jesus explains this is failed logic, because, if you put away your wife unlawfully you not only commit adultery if you marry someone else, but you cause your former wife to commit adultery if they remarry. And those who marry these unlawfully divorced women commit adultery. Women were not allowed to put away a husband according to the Law of Moses (Deuteronomy 24:1). However, Greco-Roman law allowed women to separate (divorce) from their husband. This created a problem in the Jewish community which Jesus addressed in private (Mark 10:10-12). Paul repeats these commands but takes it one step further. He says, if the woman is separated from her husband that she is to remain unmarried or reconcile back to him because this civil allowance was outside of scriptural permissions. Paul ends this statement by commanding the man not to leave his wife (1 Corinthians 7:10-11). Gentile women thought they had the same rights as men. We can see that addressed several times in the church (1 Corinthians 14:34). That is why you see men and women being told not to divorce their unbelieving spouse (1 Corinthians 7:12-13). There were those who thought they were to divorce their unbelieving spouse because Ezra's command about putting away pagan women and the children born to them (Ezra 10:3). We know this because Paul uses a logical argument by saying your children would be unclean if the unbeliever was not sanctified, but now your children are holy (1 Corinthians 7:14). As in all arguments, there were those on the other side of the argument who said it is unlawful to put away your spouse if they have been faithful to you in marriage (1 Corinthians 7:15). Paul encourages believers to remain in their current condition in life. If you are married, don't seek to get a divorce. And if you are divorced, don't seek to get married. Remain content in whatever place in life that you find yourself in. However, he does say it is not a sin for virgins and men who were loosed from a wife to marry (1 Corinthians 7:27-28). Same with widows (1 Corinthians 7:29). Even the early church had a very strict belief on divorce and remarriage.
