About the Book

(Álvar o Álvaro Núñez Cabeza de Vaca; Jerez, 1507 - Sevilla, 1559) Conquistador español. Miembro de la fracasada expedición de Pánfilo de Narváez a la Florida (1527), vivió durante ocho años entre los indios y, tras un largo y penoso viaje, logró reunirse con los españoles en México. Entre 1540 y 1544 fue gobernador del Río de la Plata.Nieto de Pedro de Vera, conquistador y primer gobernador de la isla de Gran Canaria, Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca partió en 1527 hacia las Américas, junto a su esclavo negro de origen marroquí Estebanico, enrolado como tesorero en la expedición de Pánfilo de Narváez que tenía como misión la exploración de la costa del golfo de México entre la Florida y el río de Las Palmas (actual río Grande del Norte). La flota, compuesta por cinco navíos y seiscientos hombres, zarpó de Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Cádiz) y, tras hacer escala en Santo Domigo y Cuba, se encaminó hacia las costas de Florida, donde, en abril de 1528, una tempestad les obligó a desembarcar en la bahía de Tampa.Pánfilo de Narváez decidió, en contra de la opinión de Álvar Núñez, seguir la expedición por tierra, mientras mandaba su flota hacia el oeste en busca de un puerto seguro en el río Grande, que creía erróneamente cercano. Tras un periplo en el que se internaron por tierras de los hostiles indios apalaches, sufrieron la escasez de víveres y el acoso de enfermedades, lo que les hizo regresar al litoral; al no encontrar los navíos de su flota, continuaron la travesía en busca del río Grande en cinco canoas improvisadas que volvieron a naufragar poco después de superar el delta del Mississippi, en la isla del Malhado, a la altura de Galveston (Texas).Narváez y la mayoría de los expedicionarios murieron, mientras que unas pocas decenas de supervivientes, con Álvar Núñez entre ellos, fueron hechos prisioneros por los indígenas. Núñez consiguió sobrevivir gracias a las virtudes curativas que los indígenas le atribuyeron, y tras pasar dos o tres años de tribu en tribu como curandero o mercader, siguió su viaje hacia el oeste junto al negro Estebanico, Andrés Dorantes y Esteban del Castillo.Recorrieron el sur de Texas, cruzaron el río Grande aproximadamente a la altura de la actual ciudad de El Paso y, tras atravesar los actuales estados mexicanos de Coahuila, Chihuahua y Sonora, se encontraron, cerca de ocho años después de su partida y tras haber pasado por innumerables penalidades, con un grupo de exploradores mandado por el capitán Álvarez, quien en mayo de 1536 los condujo a Culiacán y, más tarde, a Ciudad de México, donde fueron recibidos por el virrey Antonio de Mendoza y por Hernán Cortés con todos los honores. Álvar Núñez trajo consigo, además, las primeras noticias sobre las legendarias siete ciudades de Cíbola y Quivira, ricas en oro, que expediciones posteriores, como las de Marcos de Niza o Vázquez de Coronado, intentaron hallar.Tras retornar a España en 1537, en 1540 Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca logró de Carlos I de España una capitulación para sustituir a Pedro de Mendoza, muerto poco tiempo antes, en la exploración del Paraná, y para socorrer a la colonia española establecida en la zona, comprometiéndose además a aportar 8.000 ducados propios para financiar la expedición; a cambio, Carlos I lo nombró capitán general, gobernador y adelantado del territorio del Río de la Plata.
