"El Reino de las Sirenas" es una recreación novelada en torno al misterio del Mary Celeste, el bergantín de bandera estadounidense cuya tripulación desapareció para siempre sin dejar rastro en el Atlántico, cerca de las Azores, entre noviembre y diciembre de 1872, en circunstancias bastante extrañas y nunca del todo esclarecidas. Un caso que pasaría a convertirse en uno de esos grandes enigmas relacionados con el mar y la navegación marítima no resueltos y que ha inspirado como ningún otro la imaginación de cineastas y escritores. Al mando del capitán Benjamin Spooner Briggs, que viajaba junto a su esposa, su hija, de dos años de edad, y siete marineros, zarpó desde el puerto de Nueva York rumbo a Europa el 7 de noviembre de 1872. Casi un mes más tarde, el 4 de diciembre de 1872, la nave, que transportaba en su bodega 1.701 barriles de alcohol industrial con destino a Génova (Italia), fue hallada completamente abandonada muy cerca de las Azores por otro buque, el Dei Gratia, que capitaneaba David Reed Morehouse, amigo de los Briggs. Después de comprobar que en el Mary Celeste no había ni un alma, Morehouse dio orden a algunos de sus hombres para que arreglasen los aparejos de aquel velero encontrado a la deriva, que estaba en condiciones de navegar, y lo trasladaran al puerto británico más cercano, que dada su posición, era el de Gibraltar, a fin de obtener el importe del rescate, un porcentaje de su valor y el valor del cargamento, según lo contemplado en las leyes marítimas internacionales. Una vez puesto a buen recaudo el bergantín, y entregado a la autoridad, el capitán Morehouse reclamó la indemnización que le correspondía por el salvamento ante la Corte del Vicealmirantazgo y como consecuencia de ello se abrió una investigación, de la que se hizo eco la prensa más importante de la época. Un proceso que más que lograr el esclarecimiento de los hechos lo que consiguió fue dar pie al nacimiento de la leyenda, una de las más célebres, por cierto de la historia, con barco fantasma o maldito como protagonista.
About the Author: Periodista -cursó estudios en la Universidad Complutense de Madrid- y licenciado en Ciencias Políticas y Sociología -por la UNED-, J. A. Ortega nació en Los Barrios, comarca del Campo de Gibraltar, provincia de Cádiz, el 4 de enero de 1965. Ha trabajado para los diarios Europa Sur y El Faro de Algeciras Información, además de colaborar con otros medios de prensa, radio y tv, y ha participado en la puesta en marcha de diferentes proyectos de comunicación locales y comarcales. También ha llevado a cabo la redacción de obras de recopilación histórica y de memorias de personajes conocidos en la comarca campogibraltareña y ha prestado durante 12 años sus servicios profesionales en el gabinete de prensa del Ayuntamiento barreño, primero como redactor y, más tarde, como responsable de dicho departamento de la institución municipal. Ha publicado un libro de relatos, "Viaje de regreso" (1996), la novela "El clan de los ilusos" (1999) y cuentos y poemas en antologías compartidas, tanto en España como en el exterior, y revistas literarias, así como numerosos artículos de opinión, reportajes y entrevistas a lo largo de una ya dilatada carrera profesional que le ha permitido el contacto con destacadas personalidades del ámbito político, cultural, literario y artístico y llevar a cabo numerosos viajes por Europa, América y África.
