El regreso de los muertos y las promesas del oro refiere a dos temáticas controvertidas y urgentes en el campo de las discusiones éticas de la arqueología sudamericana. Por un lado, los reclamos de Pueblos Originarios por la restitución de cuerpos humanos despojados de territorios sagrados, depositados y exhibidos en museos, y por otro lado, las implicancias de las metodologías arqueológicas puestas en acto en áreas impactadas por megaproyectos mineros.

El eje de las discusiones que ofrece este volumen reside en los conflictos sociales que son contexto de diferentes ideas sobre lo que el patrimonio arqueológico es y significa; intentando suturar las metodologías a la manera proteccionistas o conservacionista. En tiempos de bicentenario de las naciones sudamericanas, este es un momento propicio, para repensar los tradicionalismos conservacionistas y fortalecer los valores sociales activos que el patrimonio arqueológico ha adquirido en duras historias de expoliación y expropiación.
