About the Book

Two young American women left the familiar behind in New Jersey to work in Africa in the 1960s. Their aim was to help the less fortunate and changed the world. They risked their lives to help others but instead found themselves in a war zone. They had thought of their volunteer work in Africa as going to teach the people, but they became social workers and advocated in a dangerous environment. They eventually escaped back to the United States along with the orphan boy that they rescued. The reader is invited to follow this engaging story as the women encounter brushes with danger. We admire their tenacity and their strong faith despite the daily dangers they face. In a world that seems lonely and full of strive and "isms", the boy who has now become a man finds love and hope despite differences in origin and geography. The novel presents an example of faith and navigation through challenges. It presents stories of survival and hope in a broken world and lifts up characters that survive and thrive despite hardships. It is a story of inspiration and a story of hope. Refuge in the Battlefield is a story that explores the source of human problems . Human strength, compassion and resiliency are shown despite the differences in race and religion. Danger maybe all around, but it is when we care for each other that we find fulfillment. Dr. Ezekiel Ette is the Chair person of the Department of Social Work at Delaware State University. He brings to fiction his passion and questions from years of teaching about spirituality and social work. This novel is a riveting story that explores human kindness as well as human brutality. In this story, we see the violence of war, the oppressive nature of culture but above all, we see the kindness of strangers.
About the Author: Dr. Ette received his Bachelor;'s degree in English from The University of Tennessee and his theological education from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He later obtained the MSW and the Ph.D degrees from Portland State University in Portland Oregon. His other works include two non-fiction: Annang Wisdom: Tools for Post Modern Living and Nigerians in America published by Lexington Books.
