Christoph Volkmar untersucht die Zeit der lutherischen Reformation und hinterfragt dabei drei wichtige Erzahltraditionen der Reformationsgeschichte: die Rolle der Fursten als Forderer der Reformation, das Schicksal der spatmittelalterlichen Reformversuche und die Einordnung einer Schlusselfigur der Zeit. Im Mittelpunkt der Untersuchung steht Herzog Georg von Sachsen (1471-1539). Dieser gilt als scharfster Gegner Luthers unter den deutschen Fursten. Um seine Rolle neu zu verstehen, betrachtet der Autor die Genese seiner Politik in den Jahrzehnten vor der Reformation. Welchen Einfluss konnten weltliche Landesherren bereits am Ausgang des Mittelalters auf die Kirche in ihren Territorien ausuben und inwiefern wurden sie zu Forderern kirchlicher Erneuerung? Anschliessend zeichnet Christoph Volkmar die Versuche Georgs nach, mit den Machtmitteln des Kirchenregiments die Reformation zu verhindern. Damit wird ein zentrales Erfolgsmodell der Reformation ins Gegenteil verkehrt. Tatsachlich gelang es dem sachsischen Herzog, die Evangelische Bewegung in seinem Territorium einzudammen und gleichzeitig eine altglaubige Erneuerung nach der Formel 'Reform statt Reformation' voranzutreiben. Von ganz unerwarteter Seite wird so die zentrale Bedeutung der Fursten fur den Erfolg der Reformation erneut herausgestellt. Nicht fernab von Wittenberg, sondern mitten im 'Mutterland der Reformation' werden dabei die Anfange von katholischer Reform und Gegenreformation sichtbar, die als Alternativen auch in jenem Umfeld prasent blieben, in dem die Reformation zu weltgeschichtlicher Bedeutung emporstieg.
