Was hat Sport mit Bildung zu tun? Wenn der Gegenstand des Sports das Sich-Bewegen ist, welche Relevanz kommt dann der Bewegung für die Bildung zu? Der Stellenwert des Sportunterrichts in der Gesellschaft wird in einer Bemerkung Schwanitz deutlich, der in seinem Bestseller "Bildung. Alles, was man wissen muß" das Wort Sport nur ein einziges Mal verwendet. In Bezug auf den "jämmerlichen Zustand" (Schwanitz, 2002, S. 32) deutscher Schulen schreibt er (ebd., S. 26): "Eine ernsthafte, fachlich solide Überlegung über Bildungsziele findet nirgendwo statt. [...] Die Schule ist zum Prinzip des Tauschhandels zurückgekehrt. Deutsch kann durch Sport ausgeglichen werden und Mathematik durch Religion." Hier wird ersichtlich, dass der Rang des Fachs Sport niedriger als der von Mathematik oder Deutsch eingestuft wird. Worauf diese Auffassung basiert und inwiefern sie die tatsächliche gesellschaftliche Einschätzung des Sportunterrichts widerspiegelt, bleibt zu diskutieren. Festzuhalten ist, dass der Sport in der Schule hinsichtlich bildungstheoretischer Ziele nicht ohne Einschränkungen mit den gesellschafts-, sprachoder naturwissenschaftlichen Fächern verglichen werden kann. Er nimmt neben Musik und Kunst eine besondere Position in der schulpolitischen Debatte ein. So wird seit Jahren in der Wissenschaft kontrovers über mögliche Bildungsinhalte der sportlichen Bewegung diskutiert. Dabei scheint das menschliche Sich-Bewegen für schulische Bildungsprozesse doch geradezu zwingend zu sein, wenn es als "Grundphänomen des Daseins" (Laging & Prohl, 2005, S. 10) begriffen wird.
