Dazu wird die Selbstregulationsstrategie des mentalen Kontrastierens aus der Theorie der Fantasierealisation zugrundegelegt. Mentales Kontrastieren führt bei hohen Erfolgserwartungen zu starker Zielbindung, zu anhaltendem Zielstreben und effektiver Zielerreichung. In dieser zweiteiligen Online-Studie wurden 127 Teilnehmer in drei Versuchsbedingungen eingeteilt: Mentales Kontrastieren von negativer Zukunft mit positiver Realität, nur negative Zukunft und nur positive Realität. Die Teilnehmer sollten diejenige ihrer schlechten Angewohnheiten wählen, deren Reduzierung für sie am wichtigsten sei. Allen Versuchspersonen gelang es, ihre ungewollte Angewohnheit zu reduzieren. Spezifische Effekte der mentalen Kontrastierung waren für die abhängigen Variablen Zielbindung, Energetisierung, Häufigkeit des Verhaltens und Reduzierungsbeginn nicht signifikant.
