Im ersten Quartal des Jahres 2010 wurden fast 640.000 Tageszeitungsexemplare weniger verkauft als im gleichen Quartal des vorigen Jahres. Das entspricht einem Rückgang von circa 2,7 Prozent. Zum Beispiel verzeichnet die Bild-Zeitung in den letzten beiden Jahren einen Absatzrückgang von fast 300.000 Exemplaren, was einem relativen Wert von zehn Prozent entspricht. Die ausgewiesene Qualitätszeitung Süddeutsche Zeitung verkauft heute 10.000 Exemplare weniger als vor zwei Jahren, was ungefähr einem Rückgang von zwei Prozent entspricht. Die Werbeumsätze der Tageszeitungen sind im Vergleich zum letzten Jahr um 13 Prozent gesunken und im Online-Bereich um circa fünf Prozent gefallen. Außerdem setzt sich der Trend fort, dass Tageszeitungen zunehmend Leser an Online-Medien verlieren, weil sie aktueller und kostenfrei sind. GÖTZ HAMANN fasst die Lage treffend zusammen: "Die alte Welt ist aus den Fugen. Süddeutsche Zeitung und Financial Times Deutschland, Zeitschriften wie Stern und Capital - überall wird gespart, gekürzt, gekündigt." Die Medienkrise ist nicht bloß eine Folge der Finanzkrise, sondern eben diese hat die Notlage nur vorgezogen. Seit langem ist den Verlagen bewusst, dass sich die Medienlandschaft im Umbruch befindet, aber da die Krise nicht allgegenwärtig war, haben sie sich nicht mit ihr befasst. Der Grund für die Medienkrise ist das wachsende Desinteresse der Gesellschaft für öffentliche Angelegenheiten. Außerdem wachsen junge Rezipienten mit dem Internet als kostenfreiem Informationsmedium auf, was zu einem fehlenden Interesse an der Tageszeitung führt.
