About the Book

This volume comprises a coherent and logically sequential accumulation of `chosen subjects' from contemporary international law. The starting point for the study of these subjects is norms, rising to values and descending to facts, it being understood that this threefold approach will be an integrated approach.
International monetary relations have changed considerably since the signature of the Bretton Woods Agreements in 1944. The progressive and increasing globalization of the economy has led to the privatization of national currencies. This phenomenon has revealed itself in the massive utilization of the great national currencies even outside their area of legal circulation, which has resulted in the appearance of Euro-arkets. Furthermore, on the regional plane, the continued existence of competing national currencies may appear obsolete if placed in the context of international financial globalization and of the creation of a unified economic area which has given rise to the creation of the single European currency (EMU).
