About the Book

Aquaculture contributes to over 70% of inland fish production placing India to second rank in the world aquaculture produce marking the era for Blue Revolution. Seed availing is the primary requirement of any aquaculture programme. Due to spread of fish and shellfish aquaculture in this country, the demand for seed of fish and shellfish aquaculture in this country, the demand for seed by aquafarmers has been increased tremendously during the last two decades and there is a need to evolve cheap and reliable technique for controlled seed production. Reproduction in fish and shellfish is predominantly a periodic phenomenon governed by interplay of a number of endogenous (hormones) and exogenour factors (photoperiod, temperature, rainfall etc). The basic hormonal mechanisms involved in gonadal maturation, breeding (spawning) and seed production of the commercially important fish and shellfish inhabiting Indian waters are being addressed in this book keeping in view of the recent advances in played by the hypothalamic hormones (GnRH, GnRIH), gonadotropins (GtH, GtH-2), growth hormone, sex steroids, pheromones, melatonin, villogenin as well as secretions from syestalk, brain and thoracic ganglia in fish and shellfish reproduction, rspectively. Hatchery technology for controlled breeding, larval rearing and seed production of Indian major carps, catfish, endangered masheer and freshwater giant as Ganga river prawn (Macrobrachium spp.) have been described. Importance of nutrition in bloodstock management for advancing maturity and multiple breeding for enhanced seed production has been elaborated. Isolation, purification and characterization of growth hormone, cryopreservation of milt of the Indian major carps in bulk, calcium metabolism during reproduction, anti-oxidative defense on ovarian tissues, effects of adrenocortical hormones and ACTH on hematological parameters, biotechnological applications of hormones and potential scope of transgeneic fish and shellfish in enhancing aquaculture production have also been highlighted by the leading scientists.About the AuthorDr. B.N. Singh FNAAS, obtained his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Zoology (Fishery Biology) during 1963 and 1966, respectively from B.H.U., Varanasi. He was selected as Designated Reproductative by the Smithsonian Institution, Washington to work with Prof. G.M. Huges on respiratory physiology of fishers at the Department of Zoology, Bristol University, U.K. During 1968-1972. Dr. Singh solved the intriguing problems of O2 release and control of breathing in certain air-breathing fishes. Dr. Singh was also FAO Visiting Scientists to Department of Fisheries and Allied Aquaculture, Auburn University, USA. His fields of special interest are hormonal manipulations of advanced maturation, multiple breeding, brood fish rearing and management of carps and catfishes. Dr. Singh was Head, Fish Physiology Division, CIFA during 1986-1998, Assistant Director General (Inland Fisheries) from 1999-April 2002 and Deputy Director General (Fisheries), Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi during May-July 2002. Dr. A.K. Pandey (1957) did his B.Sc. (Hons.) from B.H.U., Varanasi (1976), M.Sc. (1978) and Ph.D. (1990) from University of Gorakhpur. He successfully induced bred the pond-reared endangered golden masher near Dehradun and obtained absolute masculanization in tilapia by feeding fry with 17a-methyltestosterone-incorporated diet under extended photoperiod. By hormonal and dietary manipulations, he achieved success in advancing maturity in the Indian major carps and at fish by one and half months. Dr. Pandey has published more than 150 scientific papers in journals of repute. He is the recipient of Dr. V.G. Jhingran, Archana Pallav, Dr. Zahoor Qasim, Contemporary Zoologist of 20th Century, Dr. S.L. Mishra, Congress of Zoology, Environmental Sciences and Gold Medals for his outstanding Contributions in various fields of life sciences.
