About the Book

In this book author Leon James presents the definitive answers and explanations given by Jung and Swedenborg on the question of our immortality. These two giants of psychology have explored what lies in the vast psychic riches of human consciousness. All human beings are intimately familiar with their own mental world, but few realize that it is part of a collective psychic world that is universal and eternal. We have access to each other's mental world by deepening our consciousness through the exploration of the collective unconscious. By looking within our own self we become conscious of the self of others. It is exciting to know that we are not alone in our mind and that the entire human race is interconnected through the collective unconscious that gives birth and development to the mind of each individual. Since the mind is immortal it must have an immortal body in which it can reside and operate forever. Death separates our mind from its connection to the physical body and world. Our afterlife in eternity is lived with this immortal body that is called the spirit body. Every human being is born into eternity with this immortal spirit body. While we are still attached to the physical body we are unconscious of our spirit body and its spiritual environment. The three-day dying resuscitation procedure separates us from the temporary physical body and therefore from the physical world. As we awaken in the full consciousness of the spirit body we suddenly are able to perceive and explore the afterlife of eternity. We then discover that all human beings awaken through death in the same spiritual world. Everyone who preceded us from the beginning of the universe is there with whom we can now interact and have relationships. This is very exciting to learn and to look forward to. Most of all, this knowledge allows us to control our afterlife destiny in eternity. The unparalleled genius and knowledge of Jung and Swedenborg provide the basis for presenting a coherent rational and unified scientific theory of the immortal human mind and of God's very close relationship to the human race and to every individual. More than anyone in history and science Swedenborg has brought to people a definite and specific knowledge of the dying process, the resuscitation after death into the afterlife world of eternity, and the detailed ethnographic descriptions of lifestyles in the afterlife, including the landscapes, the people, psychic cities, and habitations of heaven and hell, which are not places but good and bad mental states in every person's mind. In this book you'll find 150 brief selections from Jung's work and 85 longer selections from the work of Swedenborg. These two authors are giants in the history of psychology who enrich our knowledge and imagination of our present and of our immortal future. This book collects their ideas into short quotations and longer selections of what they wrote about the psychic world, God, death, immortality, resurrection, love, dreams, and other vibrant ideas from depth psychology, analytical psychology, and theistic psychology. The author, Leon James, who is knowledgeable in theistic psychology, shows how the ideas of Jung and Swedenborg complement each other, enriching our understanding of the spiritual topics they discuss and have become so vital to our modern technological generation.
About the Author: Dr. Leon James has been Professor of Psychology at the University Hawaii since 1971. He has also held academic positions at McGill University, Laval University, University of Wisconsin, and University of Illinois. Since 1960 he has conducted research, published articles and books, and taught courses in several scientific specialty subjects that include the following: social-personality theory and measurement; statistics and research design; psycholinguistics and ethnosemantics; ethnomethodology and intersubjectivity; discourse analysis; language learning and teaching; library and information science; driving psychology; road rage; sidewalk rage; air rage; the spiritual psychology of Emanuel Swedenborg; theistic psychology; cyberpsychology; marriage and couplehood. Dr. James is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Psychology and Clinical Psychiatry, and he is on the Editorial Board of various academic journals including Acta Psychopathologica Journal. He regularly consults with safety organizations and institutions worldwide on driving psychology. He is considered an expert on "road rage", "air rage" and "sidewalk rage", and has given well over one thousand newspaper interviews and media appearances. In 1997 he was among the first to give expert testimony to the Transportation Sub-Committee of the U.S. Congress on the then emerging topic of road rage and aggressive driving. Since then road rage and aggressive driving have continued to increase, killing thousands of victims every year and injuring millions of people yearly. His book with Diane Nahl Road Rage and Aggressive Driving (2000) provides behavioral methods to help drivers gain control over their traffic emotions. These methods have been taught to thousands of people throughout the United States who are preparing to obtain a driver's license. For the past thirty years he has focused his research especially on the Writings of Swedenborg, looking for ways to transform Swedenborg's spiritual reports and ideas into the language and theory of modern scientific psychology. Leon James coined the expression "theistic psychology" in 1990. He acknowledges that Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772) is the actual founder of theistic psychology, even though Swedenborg himself did not use this expression. This book is the latest instance of that continuing task of bringing Swedenborg's ideas to the science of psychology and the practice of self-analysis.
