Era y edad memorable ser� siempre el siglo diecinueve para las generaciones futuras; augustas sus invenciones, alt�simos sus merecimientos en letras y ciencias. Pero en medio de tanta magnificencia p�blica y privada, las clases proletarias apare cen como un espectro, las costumbres decaen, el ego�smo es el canon de la moral, la religi�n es objeto de vilipendio y las constituciones de los Estados m�s poderosos se ven gravemente amenazadas por las nuevas fuerzas sociales que la civilizaci�n ha puesto en.juego. Todo se discute con doloroso an�lisis, todo se critica y todo se niega en defensa de un m�vil humano que se ha erigido arbitrariamente en fuerza y luz a la vez de la conciencia y de la historia. �c�mo no ha de ser hondo el espanto, inmensa la ansiedad, temerosa la incertidumbre, y ardientes los deseos y clamores por la posesi�n de una nueva f� que traiga al esp�ritu conturbado, la salvaci�n, el reposo y la confiada dicha?

Quien desespera de que se realice el bien en esta vida, aplaza toda esperanza para otra m�s venturosa, y si no condena al mundo a la inmovilidad y a la rutina, contempla al menos con ojos indiferentes sus miserias y sus dolores: quien no ha perdido la f� en la raz�n y en la capacidad social del hombre, convierte en vigor el desaliento y contin�a batallando con porfiado tes�n por la verdad y por el progreso, quejuzga incesante, inevitable e irresistible. Sea � no necesaria esta lucha entre los distintos y a veces opuestos elementos de la civilizaci�n que han ido apareciendo en el andar de los tiempos; sean aparentes y no reales las angustias de la raz�n y las tribulaciones de la conciencia; arribemos � la playa bendita de la. Perfecci�n relativa del gran Fil�sofo cristiano, � caminemos al azar, arrastrados por el pernicioso influjo de las corrientes materialistas, es forzoso reconocer que la lucha es el rasgo predo minante de nuestra civilizaci�n, que vivimos en una �poca que ha planteado esa muchedumbre de cuestiones en que ri�en a muerte la fe con la raz�n, el orden con la libertad, el individuo con el Estado, el trabajo con el capital, y que de la feliz y acertada resoluci�n de esos grandes y pavorosos problemas, religiosos, pol�ticos, sociales y econ�micos, que sintetizan el movimiento de la ciencia social contempo ranea, depende el azaroso estado presente y eldestino futuro de la humanidad. Ahora bien: cuando todo se agita y se conmueve; cuando no hay l�mites sagrados para la raz�n cuando la duda arraiga en la mente y engendra en los senos de la conciencia el indiferentismo y la incredulidad que van destruyendo los ideales m�s puros; cuando el error y la utop�a se levantan frente a frente a la verdad, y la combaten, y aspiran a vencerla y humillarla; cuando la ruina de la civilizaci�n actual es una amenaza constante ylos elementos revolucionarios de la ciencia, de la religi�n y de la politica se disponen a librar �decisiva batalla; las Universidades, �rganos de propaganda elevad�sima que viven dentro de la realidad, no pueden ni deben guar dar silencio, porque solo una preocupaci�n egoista puede reducir y limitar la funci�n social que desempe�an, a estudiar y contemplar los fen�menos de la vida bajo su aspecto m�s risue�o y apacible: que ense�ar es, como dec�a el ilustre escritor suizo Carlos Wagner a los estudiantes de Paris, en una reciente y famosa conferencia, defender la experiencia que da la vida, la inspiraci�n que se recoge en la pr�ctica, el discernimiento que la reflexi�n presta, la sublimidad y riqueza de ideas y senti mientos que con la cultura se adquieren, la paz que fortifica el alma contra los hura canes de los dias presentes.
