German description: Verschiedene wissenschaftliche Disziplinen (Geographie, Alte Geschichte, Archaologie und Ethnologie) stellen sich in diesem Buch der Frage, wie der Mensch den ihn umgebenden naturlichen Raum erschliesst, wahrnimmt und pragt und welche Unterschiede dabei bei nomadischen oder sesshaften Kulturen festzustellen sind. Physische Raume werden zu kulturell oder politisch abgrenzbaren Raumen, zu Landschaften und Territorien, was an Beispielen aus dem heutigen Sudan, aus Nordafrika und dem Mittelmeerraum in klassischer Antike und Mittelalter und aus dem kaukasischen Steppenraum gezeigt wird.
About the Author: Contributor Biography - German Roxana Kath studierte Alte Geschichte, Kunstgeschichte, Germanistik und Soziologie an der Technischen Universitat Dresden. 1998 bis 2001 arbeitete sie als wissenschaftliche Hilfskraft am Lehrstuhl fur Alte Geschichte der TU Dresden. Anschliessend war sie als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Sonderforschungsbereich 537 "Institutionalitat und Geschichtlichkeit," Projekt A2 "Der romische mos maiorum von den Anfangen bis in die augusteische Zeit. Offentliche Rituale und soziopolitische Stabilitat" (Prof. Martin Jehne) an der TU Dresden tatig. 2002 vertrat sie die Assistentenstelle am Lehrstuhl fur Alte Geschichte der Universitat Leipzig und war von 2003 bis 2007 wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am SFB 586 im Teilprojekt B5 "Romische Herrschaft im Maghreb zwischen Sesshaftigkeit und Nomadismus." 2004 wurde sie mit einer Arbeit zum Thema "Nulla mentio pacis - Untersuchung zu Formen der Verarbeitung und Memorierung militarischer Ruckschlage und Niederlagen in der romischen Republik" promoviert. Seit Oktober 2007 vertritt sie die Juniorprofessur fur Alte Geschichte an der Universitat Leipzig.Anna-Katharina Rieger studierte Klassische Archaologie, Alte Geschichte und Vorderasiatische Archaologie in Munchen und Bonn. Anschliessend arbeitete sie an der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften (1995-1997), am Deutschen Archaologischen Institut Rom (2000) sowie der Georg-August-Universtitat Gottingen (2001-2002). 1998 wurde sie mit einer Arbeit zu Heiligtumern in Ostia in Munchen promoviert. Seit 2002 arbeitete sie als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Seminar fur Orientalische Archaologie und Kunstgeschichte der Martin-Luther-Universitat Halle-Wittenberg mit Schwerpunkten in der Stadt- und Siedlungsarchaologie sowie der Religionsgeschichte und von 2004 bis 2008 als Bearbeiterin des Projekts A7 im SFB 586 zu Lebens- und Wirtschaftsweisen in der antiken Marmarica, das sie bis 2011 weiterfuhrt.
