Meno felice è il capitolo dedicato a La letteratura morale ed ascetica, specie per ciò che riguarda i poeti gnomici, dei quali si fa poco più che un'enumerazione. Ma convien riflettere alle difficoltà che presenta la storia letteraria dei primi secoli, sopra tutto pel fatto che il materiale è, per gran parte, ancora manoscritto e ancora si desiderano su molti scrittori speciali studj analitici. Non sarebbe dunque giusto far carico al V. Di una incompiu tezza che, nel maggior numero dei casi, non dipende da lui ma piuttosto de riva dalla natura stessa delle cose. Pur tuttavia, qualche omissione esclusi vamente imputabile all' autore possiamo notare e deplorare. Tale è, ad es., quella di fra Simone da Cascia, che il V. Non ricorda neppure e che, es sendo nato negli ultimi anni del sec. XIII e morto il 9 febbraio 1348, doveva esser messo (certo, con assai maggior diritto di fra Giordano da Rivalto) in compagnia del Passavanti e del Cavalca, del beato Colombini e di Cate rina da Siena. Singola1e dimenticanza! Tanto piu singolare in quanto che il nome di fra Simone si presenta intimamente collegato con quello appunto del Cavalca, per la controversia, dibattutasi, e ora rinnovata, fra gli eruditi, circa l'autenticità delle opere attribuite a quest'ultimo. Ma anche di questa con troversia inutilmente si cercherebbe, sia nel testo sia nelle note, la più fug gevole menzione.

Gli ultimi quattro capitoli sono rispettivamente intitolati: La letteratura popolare e p0polareggiante; Le cronache volgari; Le traduzioni e le com pilazioni; Gli scrittori latini minori. Tutti sono, più o meno, pregevoli e, se non recano contributo di fatti nuovi, riescono però, ad ogni modo, assai utili e riassumono con chiarezza quanto di più certo si è potut0'fin oggi stabilire. Migliori fra tutte, com'era, del resto, da aspettarsi, sono le pagine consacrate a Dino Compagni, a Giovanni Villani e ad Albertino Mussato.
