Cette étude en didactique des sciences au primaire s'inscrit dans le domaine de recherche du changement conceptuel, lequel est issu en grande partie des constats au sujet de la persistance des conceptions initiales dites erronées des élèves (diSessa et al., 2004; Posner et al., 1982; Vosniadou, 2008). Sachant que le raisonnement, sous ses multiples formes, joue un rôle crucial dans le changement conceptuel en sciences (Peirce, 2002; Zimmerman, 2007) et que les connaissances initiales des élèves, plus ou moins organisées, constituent la base des changements conceptuels, cette recherche mise sur les compétences cognitives des élèves et sur la richesse de leurs raisonnements, plus précisément sur la puissance cognitive de leurs raisonnements analogiques (Nersessian, 2008). Dans un contexte de classe entière où la cognition est distribuée (Pea, 1993; Salomon, 1993), l'observation de 142 élèves québécois de la 3e à la 6e année lors de l'exploration du phénomène de la flottaison s'est faite selon une stratégie méthodologique multi-instrumentale: questionnaire sur les croyances épistémiques, carnet scientifique, entretiens individuels, enregistrements audio vidéo.
