About the Book

The book Raised on Pinto and Cornbread is a story about a boy that grew up in Jackson County Alabama on Sand Mountain in Pisgah and in Stevenson and Bridgeport. He grew up poor and views himself as being a successful person and representing the American Dream. No, he didn't grow up and become a millionaire business man or any kind of a famous person. He has done nothing that will be considered a mark on the world or for humanity. But by believing and hoping and with determination he came from growing up poor, one change of clothes, going barefooted, living in old houses that other people wouldn't live in, freezing in the winter, burning up in the summer, picking and hoeing cotton, a high school dropout, no money, with a defective speech that was ridiculed and made fun of, a bootlegger's son, and eating pinto beans and cornbread and friend potatoes every day for supper.
He considers himself a success and obtained the American dream because he grew up and got a good job, got a GED, promoted to a manager's position and desk job, made a decent salary, lived in houses that didn't leak and warm in the winter and cool in the summer, a change of clothes for every day, a checking and savings account, couple of pairs of shoes, couple of winter coats, a good car to drive that he doesn't have to push to get started, different kind of food every day of the week, but still loves pinto bens and cornbread and fried potatoes, a wife, daughter, two grandkids, 5 great grandkids, retired, and has everything he needs and most everything he wants.
Some people don't look at him as a success and some don't understand why a book was written about a person that never accomplished anything big. But when you compare how far he has come from his life as a youngster to his life as an adult, he is very successful and a rich man. He is an example of thousands of other kids in American that grew up like he did dreaming of a better life and succeeding with only hope and determination and hard work.pper just about every night, picking cotton and bootlegging moonshine whiskey and dreaming of a better life and later turning those dreams into reality
