A finales del siglo XVI, la monarquía de los Austrias, inicia en España una persecución sobre los moriscos con la idea de expulsarlos de la península. Tras crueles y sangrientas batallas en las Alpujarras, Raimundo de Bentomiz, morisco zahorí rabdomante, huye de la zona en dirección a Sevilla con la idea de abandonar España y comenzar otra vida. Casualmente hace noche en la Hacienda de las Monjas en Quintos antes de entrar en la capital sevillana, donde coincide con un antepasado de la extirpe Pocasangre, expropiado y condenado por hereje, que le abre camino en su salida. Se embarca a lo desconocido y recala en Canarias, donde entra al servicio de unos hacendados. Durante la travesía, descubre casualmente un cargamento de mercurio de contrabando llegando a destapar una trama de robos del mineral, que ideada entre otros por el Secretario de Estado y de Felipe II Antonio Pérez, afecta y corroe a la Corona. Descubierto y condenado a muerte por haber levantado el asunto, marcha a Inglaterra donde con una personalidad suplantada, y ayudado por sus conocimientos sobre alquimia y minerales, ejercerá de médico y mientras intenta rehacer su vida.

La novela narra los entresijos y las ambiciones de los personajes, que al amparo del reinado de Felipe II y bajo su protección, hacen fortuna a cualquier precio, llegando a poner en marcha estrategias criminales desconocidas hasta el momento. La sagacidad de Raimundo de Bentomiz le lleva a descubrir una trama de la que lejos de verse involucrado y beneficiado, acaba con el personaje lejos de su origen, e incluso relacionado estrechamente con las posturas protestantes de la Iglesia inglesa encabezadas por sir Arthur Parker, arzobispo de Canterbury.

EL AUTOR

Alfonso Cantador Alias

Alfonso Tomás Cantador Alias, (Villanueva de Córdoba-1962), es Licenciado en Filosofía y Ciencias de la Educación y Maestro. Tiene escritas tres novelas inéditas, varios relatos cortos y numerosos artículos de opinión sobre Educación y Didáctica, así como autor de varios cuentos infantiles dedicados a su hija. En septiembre de 2011 resulta ganador del Concurso de Cuentos Idus de Marzo del Ayuntamiento y bibliotecas publicas de Dos Hermanas. Desde 1983 se dedica a la docencia, habiendo pasado por todas las etapas de la misma. En la actualidad, trabaja como profesor en un Instituto público de Secundaria de su barrio: Montequinto-Dos Hermanas, donde compagina su labor docente con la coordinación de la Biblioteca del mismo. Ha colaborado en varios medios de comunicación en Los Pedroches y la provincia de Córdoba como corresponsal de prensa y radio.
