Rafael no dejó ninguna prueba escrita de su vida. No se conoce ninguna carta suya. Por ello no existe una biografía cronológicamente precisa. Lo que no hace falta para decir que no existe artista de la plástica o del diseño, que tenga en la actualidad una importancia tan decisiva históricamente como él, pese a la innegable importancia de Leonardo Da Vinci y de Miguel Ángel Buonarroti. La historia de la pintura, durante mucho tiempo se dividió en "pre-Rafael" y "post-Rafael". Las obras de Leonardo da Vinci y Miguel Ángel son de una intensidad radiante y de una muy lograda y depurada pasión. Leonardo privilegiaba muy frecuentemente el misterio, lo ignoto, lo no vislumbrado, como dando a entender que nunca se habrán de descifrar los enigmas que él ha plasmado en sus obras mayores. En contraste, Miguel Ángel, es la imagen viva de la pasión, de la potencia y de la fuerza. Es el gran equivalente artístico de la flama permanente de un genio enorme y atormentado, por su propia condición humana y por lo divino. En cambio, Rafael es extremadamente sutil y tierno. A pesar de los misterios que el alma humana desconoce, queda el agradecimiento, el dulce sabor de saberse bien amado por la divinidad y por los demás. Las obras de Rafael no nos transmiten desazón ni tormento, no parecen preocuparse e inflamarse por la pasión de sentir o por la debilidad de la carne. Rafael depura lo que Miguel Ángel inflama y enardece, y tiene un fuego, por decirlo así, controlado, una calma introspectiva, una gran serenidad de juicio contemplativo, no precisamente pasivo, sino activo en la manifestación de su ternura y de su compasión. Una compasión plenamente humana. Si en Leonardo el significado de sentir la divinidad se plasma en el enigma y en Miguel Ángel se enardece en una flama perdurable de pasión, en Rafael se mitiga ese saber, ese sentir, para convertirse en contemplación amorosa. Leonardo prefirió, de todas las manifestaciones del amor, la abstinencia, en cierta medida, para depurar su sentido. Miguel Ángel, por su parte escogió del amor todas las manifestaciones posibles, y a todas se entregó con igual pasión, pero es ese mismo enardecimiento el que le quema y el que le mueve a constricción, a lucha y a tormento. En cambio, Rafael, de las inmensas posibilidades del Amor, se extasía en la ternura de lo bien amado, de lo justo, de lo recto, y merced a ello es posible que se auto contemple en la majestad no de su enigma, no de su pasión, sino de su serena ternura. Históricamente Rafael se ubica en la época denominada Renacimiento, o sea el nuevo nacimiento, el nuevo nacer. Este movimiento cultural fue el resultado del sincretismo del cristianismo católico con el paganismo greco latino, produjo una apertura del pensamiento griego que confirmó el sentido religioso cristiano de la época. El Renacimiento terminó con la idea de que el cuerpo humano era el origen del pecado, típica de la edad media. La desnudez enalteció las más bellas y logradas obras artísticas de esta época. Los desnudos estilizados y pudibundos del arte gótico empleados como representaciones pecaminosas en la edad media, quedaron atrás. El renacimiento cobró vida en la actual Italia, de ahí, se desplegó por toda Europa, principalmente en las actuales Francia, Alemania, España e Inglaterra. Actualmente los artistas renacentistas son considerados cómo maestros del arte occidental, sus obras son tesoros que se exhiben en los principales museos del mundo y son admirados por millones de personas cada año.
