Terror ist zum Synonym für alles Negative geworden und täglich begleitet uns dieses Wort. Betrachtet man die öffentliche Diskussion, so möchte man meinen, dass Terror schon immer im Zusammenhang mit der Religion und insbesondere dem Islam stand. Die Bilder der religiösen Fanatisten, die uns tagtäglich in den Nachrichten begegnen, täuschen darüber hinweg, dass dieser Terrorismus nicht erst mit dem 11. September entstand. Mit Blick auf die Geschichte wird schnell klar, dass der militante bewaffnete Kampf schon seit jeher das radikalste Mittel darstellte, um seine Ansichten als Minderheit gegenüber der Majorität zu vertreten. Uns als Öffentlichkeit wurde die ehemalige Existenz eines primär politisch motivierten Kampfes gegen die Regeln der Gesellschaft wieder vor Augen geführt, als wir als Gesellschaft darüber zu befinden hatten, wie wir mit den Tätern, den Kämpfern eines solchen bewaffneten Kampfes gegen unsere Werte und Institutionen umzugehen haben. Die Frage über Gnade oder die volle Strafhärte für die ehemaligen Terroristen und damit meist Mörder polarisierte die Öffentlichkeit.Blicken wir zurück zum Stammheimprozess von 1975. Damals betraf die Angst vor den Anschlägen der RAF die Lebenswelt breiter Gesellschaftsschichten und es ging nicht um die Entlassung der von der Haft gezeichneten alten Menschen, sondern um die Inhaftierung höchst gefährlicher Personen, die bewiesen hatten, dass sie vor keinem Mittel der Gewaltanwendung zurückschrecken. Dieser Prozess, den die Bundesrepublik Deutschland unter höchsten Sicherheitsbedingungen und mit einem enormen Aufwand vorantrieb, war ein absolutes Novum in der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik.
