Derartige Aussagen haben längst einen Status der Selbstverständlichkeit erreicht. Umso verwunderlicher ist es, dass die einschlägige wissenschaftliche Literatur das Medium Radio unbeachtet von dieser Tatsache belässt. Allgemein hat das Medium Internet bedingt durch den initiierten Mediennutzungswandel bei Lesern, Zuschauern und Zuhörern unlängst einen hohen Stellenwert eingenommen. Für die Ausrichtung auf die Zielgrößen Auflage, Quote, Verweildauer oder Reichweite ist die Berücksichtigung des Distributionskanals Internet ein zentraler Faktor. Abseits von der ursprünglichen Kernkompetenz soll auch der Hörfunk in der Medienpraxis gemäß diesem Prinzip agieren, mahnte Dr. Thomas Gruber bereits im Jahr 2006: "Radio droht zu einer analogen Insel in einem Meer digitaler Angebote zu werden. Gelingt der digitale Umstieg nicht, wird Radio als Gattung in einer zunehmend digitalen Welt langsam untergehen, weil es gestiegenen Nutzererwartungen nicht mehr entsprechen kann." Der Medienwissenschaftler und ehemalige Chef des bayerischen Rundfunks attestierte dem Hörfunk in Deutschland zu diesem Zeitpunkt Defizite hinsichtlich der Nutzung der internetbasierten Medientechnologien und eine undefinierte digitale Ausrichtung der Sender. Die vorliegende Masterarbeit widmet sich der Beantwortung der Forschungsfrage, welchen Stellenwert das Radio gegenwärtig im Zeitalter des Internets besitzt und welche Funktionen des Mediums durch die Einführung digitaler Hörfunkangebote neu verhandelt werden.
