Che termine inquietante! Nessuno ne vuole far parte. Il contrario assoluto dell'individualità. La parola "massa" è un prestito dall'ambito fisico. Questo termine desta involontariamente associazioni, negative più che altro. Isacco Newton descrive per primo le caratteristiche fisiche rispettive alla massa. Ad un certo punto la ricerca legata al termine di massa conduce Newton ad un altro termine, a quello dell'inerzia. Tuttavia quel termine perde ogni legame all'inerzia nel momento, in cui il termine "massa" viene usato politicamente: "masse du peuple" si usava nel 1792 nel corso della Rivoluzione Francese per denominare il fenomeno della politicizzazione delle "masse popolari". La maggioranza della popolazione si prende il diritto di partecipazione alle decisioni politiche. Non decide più "l'eletto da Dio". Nelle "Osservazioni sulla Rivoluzione Francese" di Burke il termine inglese "crowd" viene tradotto come "... il mucchio unito... una grande massa...". Ormai si tratta di uno nuovo strato sociale, che si è creato durante l'urbanizzazione o come effetto collaterale di essa, al quale la società dei strati non era affatto preparata. La pubblicità borghese ebbe la tendenza a escludere "la massa" dalla formazione e dall'entrare in proprietà di qualsiasi tipo. Tenendo conto di questo fatto si capiscono i legami tra il movimento politico di masse e le questioni sociali: pauperismo, alzamento delle masse. Hegel denomina la massa in questo caso "senza forma" e la società in cui si crea una massa senza forma "un società mobilizzata". Nel discorso sociale il termine "massa" è, quindi, un'innovazione che allora, sul livello sociale provocò grande confusione e insicurezza, ma talvolta destò anche un grande interesse.
