Tax Account given by the Rahhani/ts of this Oral Law, may be feen in Prideaux's Connettion, Book V. Maimonides in his Preface to Seder Seraim, and in his Book 7ad Hafahah tells -us: When God revealed himfelf to Mojes, he delivered to him the Law for the Children of Ifrael, with the Comments or Explications. Filo/2's committed the Law to Writing, but delivered the Comnients_'tb Aaron and his Sons, and to thexelders of [fine], by Word of Mouth, who by oral Tradition handed them down to the Prophets, and the Prophets to the Men of the Great Synagogue. This, Opinion is founded upon a Fallage of the Talmud in Berachos, p. 1. Where it is (aid, that by the Tables are meant the Ten Commandments, 'by mm the Law, the Scrip ture, by the Precept, the Mi/hna, by hw& 7311: which I have written, the Boohs of the Prophets, and of the Hagiographers 3 and by Dhfilnb to teach them, the Gema'ra. And that by the latter we learn, Theyall were given to Mojes on Mount Sinai. Some add, that E fdras, after the Captivity of Babylon, created a new Office, and appointed a Perfon under the Name of Naf or Prince, who was the Depofitary of Tradition, refolved Cafes of Confcience, and taught the Oral Law.

The Caraites, another Se�'c of the ffiwn' who as it is generally pretended (though without Foundation, as we {hall ibew in its proper Place) reje�t all Traditions.
