Le propos de cette etude critique, a la fois premiere d'une nouvelle collection et premiere des cinq qui seront consacrees a Rabelais, est de retrouver l'intelligence d'un texte que l'esprit de routine et les prejuges ont constamment obnubile. Les editions commentees, sans lesquelles on ne peut lire Rabelais, ne font en effet, depuis cinquante ans, que se referer a l'edition critique de Lefranc et ses collaborateurs, aussi bien pour l'etablissement du texte que pour les gloses. Or ce texte est etabli de facon discutable, ne serait-ce que par sa ponctuation, et les gloses sont imbues d'un esprit de gravite et d'un parti pris de pudibonderie qui alterent profondement la pensee du Maitre. On se borne, depuis cette edition, a ronronner sur un texte abusivement fige d'ou l'on croit avoir extrait depuis belle heure la quintessence, et la litterature rabelaisienne ne fait plus que traiter de l'accessoire sans oser revenir au principal: le verbe. A partir du fac-simile des editions de 1532 et de 1542, Marc Berlioz reexamine donc chaque chapitre, et une recherche purement philologique le conduit a recuperer la portee de termes jusque la mal lus et donc mal entendus. Tout au long de cette relecture apparait alors une comprehension neuve de phrases ou de pages entieres denaturees par la signification apprise. Et l'auteur de l'etude est tout naturellement amene a decouvrir le contenu de chapitres restes lettre morte: ainsi du double sens et des sous-entendus des titres de la Librairie de saint Victor, traditionnellement regardes comme une collection de faceties; ainsi du proces de Baisecul et Humevesne tenu une fois pour toutes pour incoherent assemblage de sons; ainsi de la dispute entre Thaumaste et Panurge ou l'argumentation a toujours ete donnee pour gesticulation gratuitement obscene. Sans oublier, au chapitre de la maladie de Pantagruel, la reintegration d'un paragraphe accidentellement elimine depuis la premiere recomposition, il y a plus de quatre cents ans. Au fil de l'examen se dessine alors un Rabelais dont les intentions sont quelquefois fort differentes de celles qui sont admises et enseignees. Et force est bien de convenir que, degage des strates de commentaires qui ont abouti a le masquer a son lecteur, c'est ce Rabelais restitue qui semble etre le vrai. Pourtant Marc Berlioz ne fait que proposer a la reflexion des Rabelaisants ce Rabelais retrouve; car il ne donne nullement pour definitive sa restitution: outre, dit-il, qu'elle ne peut etre exempte d'erreurs, son dessein est, donnant le branle a une revision, d'inciter chacun a reexaminer apres lui; il aura atteint son but, ajoute-t-il, s'il a persuade qu'il est preferable de scruter encore et toujours le texte du Maitre plutot que d'empiler des theses sur la facon qu'il pouvait avoir d'enfiler ses sandales. Mene avec autant de probite que d'audace, ce retour aux sources doit relancer les etudes rabelaisiennes. En attendant, Marc Berlioz a commence de relire le Gargantua, et la meme demarche lui a deja permis de mettre au jour le contenu des Fanfreluches antidotees, piece ou les commentateurs n'ont jamais trouve fond ni rive. Les Rabelaisants, universitaires ou non, ont desormais des horizons ouverts.
