Heutzutage steht der Rabe fur Beredsamkeit, Klugheit und Witz. Aus der Marchenwelt kennt man ihn auch als Unheilverkunder oder als Begleiter von Hexen oder gar des Teufels. Entgegen der allgemein vorherrschenden Vorstellung, dass die Krahe das weibliche Pendant zum Raben sei, handelt es sich um zwei zwar eng miteinander verwandte, aber dennoch verschiedene Vogelarten. Das Ziel der Arbeit ist es, die verschiedenen Bedeutungen von Rabe und Krahe fur die Menschen der Antike zu ermitteln. Um diese Aspekte zu erschliessen, werden in dem vorliegenden Werk verschiedene bildliche Darstellungen und literarische Nachrichten nach ihren Aussagen befragt und miteinander verglichen. Ein antiker Mythos kann hierfur besonders aufschlussreich interpretiert werden: Der einst weisse Rabe wurde vom Gott Apollon aus Zorn in einen schwarzen verwandelt, nachdem er ihm eine schlechte Nachricht uberbracht hatte. Diese Verwandlung kann religionsgeschichtlich als Ersatzopfer gedeutet werden, durch das die 'Schuld' des Gottes auf den Vogel ubertragen wurde. Literarische Quellen aus byzantinischer Zeit, die aber auf antike Quellen zuruckgreifen, lassen erkennen, dass Raben, v.a. weisse Raben, als Symbol fur die Kolonisation verstanden wurden, die der delphische Apollon anfuhrte. In diesen Quellen wird berichtet, dass das Erscheinen von weissen Raben die Vertreibung von Verbrechern oder jungen Leuten aus deren Heimat nach sich zieht. In der Bildkunst findet diese Bedeutung jedoch keinen Niederschlag.Verwandlung und Vertreibung verbinden den weissen Raben mit Apollon. Als Grund fur die Verwandlung des weissen Raben wird auch in anderen Kulturen Fehlverhalten des Vogels angefuhrt. Raben konnen als ein die Kolonisation begleitendes Symbol interpretiert werden. Der weisse Rabe, der in der Natur nur selten vorkommt, stellt offenbar eine Steigerung dieses Symbolgehalts dar.Nach den Untersuchungen zum besonderen Verhaltnis der Krahe und insbesondere des Raben zum griechischen Apollon folgen Uberlegungen zu ihrem Verhaltnis zu verschiedenen anderen Gottheiten (Zeus, Hera, Athena, Mithras) und ihrer Rolle in Heldensagen (Heraklestaten, trojanischer Sagenkreis) sowie ihre Bedeutung in Fabel und Parodie, in der Magie sowie in der romischen Republik und bei den Kelten. Die verschiedenen Bedeutungen, die die Vogel in der antiken Vorstellungswelt einnahmen, bezeugen, wie genau die Natur damals beobachtet wurde und wie sie Eingang in Kunst und Literatur fand.
