François Quesnay (1694-1774) est reconnu comme l'un des grands fondateurs de l'analyse économique moderne. Chef de file de la première école de pensée économique au monde, la Physiocratie, il mérite d'être célébré autant qu'Adam Smith, qui s'inspira notoirement du corpus physiocratique pour composer sa Richesse des Nations, parue en 1776. S'il souffre encore d'être méconnu, c'est peut-être que la lecture de ses oeuvres est réputée difficile. Le célèbre zig-zag du Tableau économique ne provoque plus l'enthousiasme, ni ses explications, pourtant profondes, sur l'origine et le fondement du Droit naturel des hommes, ou sur les vertus du libre-échange. C'est le mérite de l'économiste Yves Guyot, dans l'ouvrage qui lui a consacré, de nous en rendre le redécouverte plus facile. Dans une première partie, Guyot nous trace le portrait de François Quesnay, nous racontant son parcours et son activité d'économiste. L'essentiel de sa vie, de ses premières armes en tant que chirurgien, à sa place convoitée de médecin du Roi à Versailles, et jusqu'à sa mort en grand maître de la Physiocratie en 1774, est exposé avec soin et clarté par l'auteur. S'ouvre alors la seconde partie du livre, constituée de passages de ses principaux écrits (dont le Tableau économique, le Droit naturel, ou les Maximes du gouvernement), nous permettant de comprendre le caractère véritable de l'oeuvre du plus grand précurseur d'Adam Smith en France.
About the Author: Yves Guyot (1843-1928), économiste, journaliste, et ministre sous la IIIème République, est l'auteur d'une oeuvre considérable, roulant autant sur les problématiques économiques pures (La Science économique, Inflation et Déflation, ou L'A B C du libre-échange) que sur les grands évènements de son temps, telle l'Affaire Dreyfus.
