John Locke publie The Reasonableness of Christianity as delivered in the Scriptures, en 1695. Dès 1696, Pierre Coste donne une traduction française de l'ouvrage, sous le titre Que la religion chrétienne est très-raisonnable, telle qu'elle nous est représentée dans l'Ecriture Sainte. Le christianisme est-il contraire ou conforme à la raison? Et, s'il est conforme à la raison, que signifie cette conformité? Est-il la raison de toutes choses, comme le veut Pascal offre-t-il seulement un surcroît de lumières à la raison humaine tout en se fondant sur elle, comme le veut Leibniz? A cette question Locke apporte une réponse originale. Le christianisme donne bien un surcroît de lumières à la raison humaine tout en se fondant sur elle, à condition de le ramener à l'annonce contenue dans les Evangiles et de le débarrasser des subtilités dogmatiques introduites par les théologiens. Locke inspirera les déistes anglais et les philosophes français du dix-huitième siècle, tout en conservant du rationalisme classique la thèse de l'irréductibilité de la foi à la raison.L'Essai sur la nécessité d'expliquer les Epîtres de saint Paul par lui-même, paru en anglais en 1707, constitue ce qu'on pourrait définir le manifeste principal de l'herméneutique biblique lockienne, le lieu où le philosophe expose les règles principales d'interprétation des épîtres pauliniennes. Notre édition présente la traduction française qui en a été faite en 1732 dans les OEuvres diverses, accompagnée d'un apparat critique textuel et de notes historiques.'La Vie de Coste et anecdotes sur ses ouvrages', manuscrit rédigé par Charles de La Motte autour de 1747-1748, est une biographie conduite sur le fil de la mémoire qui permet de mieux saisir le personnage de Pierre Coste, cet huguenot voué aux errances du Refuge, qui a été le principal traducteur français de Locke.
