About the Book

1841 Ben was thought dead for 3 long years. His widow Sonja clawed through days of drudgery as a house servant to a rich man who wanted her body, while she tried to pay her debts and clothe her sons. Ben came home from a prison in China to find his family emotionally empty and destitute. They struggle to reunite and rebuild their lives on the Canal, salvaging a barge they named the Ugly Boat, facing hardships and disasters, driving them to their limits.
About the Author: ROBERT F. LACKEY draws from his experiences living in 38 locations in the United States and Europe. His longest location was in Havre de Grace, Maryland, which provided him the perspective and understanding to begin his Pulaski Saga. For much of his years in Havre de Grace, he spent many weekend afternoons exploring the remnants of the Susquehanna and Tidewater Canal. He fell in love with the little town sitting at the mouth of the Susquehanna River and head of the Chesapeake Bay. Among the many historic themes coexisting within the nearby sites and lanes, the Canal Era of the 19th century drew the author's attention first. His first novel, Pulaski's Canal, began a family story that has blossomed into a family saga. Blood on the Chesapeake was the first of several sequels to follow Pulaski's Canal. His third Pulaski novel Raven's Risk was released in September 2017. The 4th Pulaski volume Kingdoms in the Marsh, was released June 6, 2018. Robert is now conducting research and writing his next novel, his 5th Pulaski book, tentatively titled Brazen Deceit, which is due out October 5th, 2018. Robert plans additional sequels to follow the Pulaski family through the mid to late 1800's. Robert developed a great appreciation of rural life and perspective from his years living in Mount Airy, North Carolina. The home of Andy Griffith and the area that gave rise to the fictional towns of Mayberry and Mount Pilot, which provided Andy with his material for much of his early days in stand-up comedy. This rural influence on Robert enabled him to step into humorous writing with a southern country flare under the persona and pen name of Pug Greenwood. As Pug, he has written two collections of hilarious homespun short stories: Tooey's Crossroads-Outrageous Tales and Bold-Face Lies and Tooey's Crossroads II - More Lies. He has also written Bim and Them, a children's adventure. He is RECENTLY RELEASED one of his short stories that first appeared in Outrageous Tales, 'The Ghost at Indian Rocks' into the full-length fantasy adventure On The Way To Alice. Follow Robert's current projects and regular updates among his friends on Facebook at www.facebook.com/RFLackey.author, and be sure to "like" the site. He also appreciates hearing from readers via the Contact Author page of this website. Below are a few photos of his favorite writing places.
