Puerto Soledad es un pueblito de pescadores a muchos kilometros de la ciudad mas proxima. Con tantos años de olvido, la suerte de estos moradores ha formado una cultura propia, donde el muelle, la cantina y el prostibulo son referencias cotidianas.Su unico capital comunitario es un destartalado y feo omnibus gris. Pero es la unica cosa terrestre que los une a la capital de vez en cuando. Hasta le han quitado muchos de sus asientos porque suelen viajar solo tres o cuatro comerciantes por sus provisiones y las prostitutas cuando retornan desencantadas con el lugar.El personaje principal, Benito Pereira, es hombre de poca educacion pero muy experiente en las cosas de la vida. Como casi todos los pobladores el tambien fue pescador de altura en sus buenos tiempos. Es un viejo testarudo y empecinado en sus creencias. A tal punto que esta convencido de haber visto, antes que nadie, el advenimiento de una suerte de virus que esta diezmando al pueblo y que para el viene del mar. Por eso se despierta cada mañana a mirar las telarañas de su pieza y a seguir con atención la suerte de la victimaria. Esa araña, la perra alzada, la gaviota solitaria en medio de una nube de arena, la hormiga que mas adelante vera escabullirse por la rendija de una puerta, son señales de vida para el viejo. Y eso es bueno.En medio del caos que sobrevendra, Pereira seguira buscando explicaciones a cosas que se viene preguntando desde hace tiempo: ¿por que un dia encontro un cardumen de tarariras a pocos metros de la costa?, y ¿por que las gaviotas eran menos cada dia?.Sobre los pajaros, se pregunta siempre donde estan los esqueletos de los que mueren, y donde el lugar elegido para morirse. Siendo tantos como las personas el no ha visto esqueletos en la costa, ni un cementerio de pajaros en todo Puerto Soledad, nunca.Poco antes del virus, la peste, o lo que sea, llego al pueblo un cura franciscano, Fray Anselmo, del cual sospechaban en la Catedral que poseia ciertas actitudes raras, como el tiempo interminable que pasaba en consagrar el pan y el vino, y era necesario llamarlo a la realidad. Decian alla que, aparte del extasis, levitaba durante esa sagrada ceremonia. Ademas, ¿cuanto de cierto habia sobre que su habito marron aparecia cada mañana inmerso en el orin de la pinica?, ¿que dicen sobre esto las seis viejitas de la capilla de Puerto Soledad que pasaron diez años custodiando la ultima hostia consagrada por el difunto Padre Luis?, quien, ademas, dejo en un baul su sotana negra, la cual volvera a usarse, y esta vez por razones de decencia simplemente.Hay otros actores vinculados a la trama del relato, precisamente, los que gotean un poco de humor en medio de lo triste, como el picaro "entrerriano", pintoresco verdulero con carretilla de mano, vestido con bombachas camperas arremangadas, cinto ancho y reloj de cadena. El mismo que solapadamente un dia ideo una encuesta politica en el pueblo valiendose de dos cajones de papas. Y obtuvo los resultados.Otro personaje de peso en Puerto Soledad es Juan Morales, que de una vida erratica en los viejos tiempos, se convirtio en un magnate pueblerino vendiendo el agua dulce del unico pozo surtidor del liquido, justo en medio de su propiedad. Y no seria de extrañarse que para las elecciones ya proximas, despues de decada y media de dictadura, se convierta en el alcalde del pueblo.El sargento Meneses es hombre muy influyente en la comunidad, tanto por su jerarquia policial, como por el hecho de ser quien recibe cada dia, en las factorias, el fruto de los pescadores para su pesaje. Se quejan de que la balanza de Meneses para algunos se queda corta, mientras beneficia a otros por claras razones politicas. Meneses fue quien viajo a la ciudad y trajo consigo todos los comentarios sobre el fraile nuevo y los desparramo por el pueblo.En esta obra conviven el drama y el humor, ambos arropados por esa fuerte nostalgia pueblerina que esta presente desde el comienzo.
