About the Book

In the 1960s, Gavin Howard came to Costa Rica from Anaheim, California. Some say he came to escape from an ex-wife. Others say that Gavin was running from the Internal Revenue Service. Or maybe he was searching for adventure.
Gavin heard about an area around Potrero Bay, centered in the Northwest Province of Guanacaste, where he could buy a large tract of land, "cheap," and sell it "expensive" with the proper promotion. His idea was to promote it for Residential Land sales and a Tourist Destination development (hotels).
Gavin purchased the area now known as Flamingo for $10,000 and began promoting lots to his friends in California. Property sales did not go as well as Gavin had hoped, and Government problems were more significant than anticipated. Soon after becoming disillusioned with his dream, he met the Marcello Brothers and sold them the Flamingo Project for $1.1 million.
In 1978, Robert Olsen came to Costa Rica, looking for development property. He met the Marcello Brothers and purchased the Flamingo area from the brothers for $1.2 million. Robert had the property surveyed and divided into "home lots" and "resort development parcels. Robert also began the Flamingo Marina construction. He soon realized that the Marina dredging allowed him to "Create New Valuable Land." He dredged the east side of the marina basin and used the dredged materials to move the 50-meter line further offshore, creating new, valuable oceanfront land. This "New Land" creation resulted in greed and jealousy between himself and the three other early developers of Flamingo. They wanted "their share of this "New Land."
From 1984 through 1986, the Nicaragua Iran/Contra war changed Costa Rica in many ways. President Ronald Reagan and the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) constructed eight airports in Costa Rica. The two most significant were the Liberia International airport and a Clandestine airport located behind Isla Murcielago (Bat Islands), known by the locals as "Ollies Point." The Flamingo airport closed simultaneously with "Iran/Contra's Arms and Drug Scandal"! This closure suggests that the CIA also constructed the Flamingo Airstrip as Iran/Contra support. The purpose of these airports was to supply Contra Forces with arms and ammunition. The Airports also provided transportation to move drugs to USA markets, sell them, and divert money to the Contras Forces in Nicaragua.
In January 1989, Jim, Chris, and their dog Sam departed San Diego, California, aboard their 52-foot sailboat, 'Shannon, ' heading south for the beginning of their around-the-world dream cruise. Jim was excited, Chris was reluctant, and their dog Sam loved the new life!
They planned to sail from San Diego, California, to Cabo San Lucas, where they would stay a few days and then continue to Mazatlán, Mexico. They planned to stay there for a couple of weeks before resuming their cruise to Costa Rica, where they planned to stay for two weeks, then off to the Panama Canal, where they would transient the canal to the Atlantic Ocean and Europe.
However, the cruising life very seldom follows a schedule. While Cruising aboard a sailboat, the only thing that is for sure is that "your plans will change"!
