Die Art und Weise des TV-Konsums hat sich ebenfalls verändert. Wurde in der Frühzeit des Fernsehens noch gemeinsam geschaut, so nahm dies ab, je mehr Fernsehgeräte verkauft wurden. Heute werden Massenmedien, insbesondere das Fernsehen, individuell vor dem heimischen TV Gerät konsumiert. Trotz alldem kann man in den letzten Jahren einen neuen Trend beobachten: eine Gegenbewegung zu dem privaten und individuellen TV Konsum. Tausende von Menschen stehen dicht aneinander gedrängt zusammen. Es ist eine fröhliche und gut gelaunte Gruppe, die auf einem öffentlichen Platz steht, oftmals in schwarz-rot-gelben Trikots, mit ihren Fanschals und witzigen Verkleidungen oder Hüten. Sie schwenken Fahnen, singen und klatschen laut. Alle schauen nach vorne auf eine große Leinwand: Fußball kommt heute, Weltmeisterschaft 2014. Die ZuschauerInnen stehen auf einer Straße, der Straße des 17. Juni, mitten in Berlin. Wie diese Szene beschreibt, sind die ZuschauerInnen bei einem internationalen Massenereignis, wie der Fußball- Weltmeisterschaft 2014 dabei: "Live und dabei", aber nicht direkt im Stadion. Sie können vermutlich dem Spiel besser folgen, Highlights mehrfach sehen, anders als die ZuschauerInnen vor Ort und doch sind sie nur mediale Rezipienten. Das heißt, der Einzelne feiert die elektronische TV-Übertragung eines sportlichen Großereignisses, sieht dieses Spiel aber nicht live vor Ort. Public Viewing ist ein kontroverses Thema. Zum Beispiel die Frage nach den Motiven der Menschen sich im Kollektiv ein Ereignis anzusehen. Public Viewing ist ein soziales Phänomen, welches die Paradoxien unserer heutigen Gesellschaft widerspiegel
