Malgré la grande fréquence des troubles du sommeil dans la population, l'intérêt des psychothérapies pour leur prise en charge est encore peu connu, alors qu'elles sont recommandées en première intention par les sociétés savantes pour l'insomnie, mais aussi d'autres troubles du sommeil moins fréquents, y compris en l'absence de contexte psychologique évident. L'objectif de ce livre vise donc à donner des outils psychothérapeutiques accessibles aux soignants, qu'ils soient ou non spécialisés dans les troubles du sommeil.

Après le rappel des règles physiologiques et chronobiologiques du sommeil sur lesquelles s'appuie toute prise en charge d'un trouble, ainsi que des aspects psychologiques associés ou identifiés comme ayant un rôle dans une pathologie donnée, l'ouvrage présente les principes psychothérapeutiques à partir du modèle de l'insomnie où les psychothérapies cognitivo- comportementales et émotionnelles représentent les pratiques les plus évaluées. L'insomnie qui est le trouble du sommeil le plus fréquent coexiste souvent avec un trouble psychiatrique ou s'associe à d'autres plaintes de sommeil (somnolence diurne excessive, trouble respiratoire nocturne, trouble moteur du sommeil, parasomnie...), requérant alors un travail thérapeutique avec des outils spécifiques ou complémentaires. Des notions importantes sont abordées, comme l'analyse fonctionnelle d'un trouble ou l'importance de l'alliance thérapeutique, qui s'appliquent à l'ensemble des situations cliniques.

Une dernière partie présente les prises en charge psychothérapeutiques qui peuvent être proposées dans les autres troubles du sommeil que sont le syndrome d'apnées obstructives du sommeil, les parasomnies (cauchemars, somnambulisme, terreurs nocturnes), la narcolepsie et les troubles du rythme veille/sommeil. Elle traite aussi des troubles du sommeil dans le cadre des pathologies psychiatriques (troubles de l'humeur, anxiété, stress post-traumatique). Des cas cliniques illustrent les chapitres, et des fiches pratiques, incluses dans l'ouvrage et téléchargeables en ligne, sont proposées aux lecteurs afin d'aider les thérapeutes dans leur apprentissage des techniques et la prise en charge de leurs patients au quotidien.
