De certo para muitos, é clara a relação entre Psicanálise e Teatro. Isso se deve ao fato de conhecimento comum de que Sigmund Freud se valeu da arte para construir seus conceitos e sua metapsicologia. O exemplo mais famoso disso é que o complexo de Édipo é tributário, no limite, da peça de teatro de Sófocles que nos traz o mito tebano.No entanto, alguns psicanalistas criticam Freud por não utilizar o "teatro por inteiro" ou seja, em sua dimensão de "tragédia", seguindo a leitura da arte teatral que é feita tradicionalmente desde Aristóteles. O mais famoso desses críticos é o francês, psicanalista e dramaturgo, Alain Didier-Weill que nos diz sobre um Freud que se esquece da tragédia e parece abraçar apenas o mito. Enquanto isso é válido para seu raciocínio, parece porém pouco preciso se olharmos para a relação de Freud com o teatro para além do Édipo e o Édipo Rei, de Sófocles.Nas páginas de A Interpretação dos Sonhos, onde o Complexo de Édipo é concebido, Freud não gasta apenas palavras para falar do mito/personagem teatral grego. Ele também o analisa usando um outro exemplar teatral: Hamlet, peça e personagem de William Shakespeare.Assim, a relação de Freud com aquilo que ele chama - na esteira do vocábulo alemão popularizado por Goethe e Holderlin - de Dichtung (conjunto de obras das Artes da Palavra, da escrita criativa, ou seja, poemas, peças teatrais, romances, contos) acaba criando, dentro das teorias psicanalíticas (do próprio Freud e as futuras), um lugar privilegiado para a produção artística literária, poética e dramática. Nota-se que, para além de Freud, os psicanalistas nas suas leituras e releituras freudianas (bem como em construções teóricas originais), também usam o Teatro, tendo Shakespeare igual destaque. Assim, seja em análises (do próprio Freud, de Jacques Lacan), seja enquanto temática integral de textos (de Ernest Jones, de André Green), os textos do Bardo inglês são notadamente uma fonte inspiracional para a Psicanálise. O presente livro, baseado em pesquisa bibliográfica, pretende demarcar alguns exemplos e analisar o uso da metáfora shakespeariana na construção teórica psicanalítica, identificando quando ela foi usada como exemplo e, tal como é o caso de André Green, quando ela foi crucial para a construção de uma nova vertente psicanalítica, a chamada "psicanálise contemporânea", bem como sua ideia de "psicanálise aplicada". Tal procedimento não permitirá apenas uma compreensão maior dos vínculos entre Teatro e Psicanálise, mas também como a psicanálise pode se utilizar da arte teatral para compreender o humano, sua psique e o lado vivaz de suas experiências. E assim ver como, usando o autor paradigmático que é William Shakespeare, as peças teatrais ajudaram a construir a compreensão da psique humana através da cosmovisão psicanalítica.
