Protection and Switchgear is designed as a textbook for undergraduate students of electrical and electronics engineering. The book aims at introducing students to the various abnormal operating conditions in power systems, system protection schemes and the phenomenon of current interruption.
With the help of detailed relay and circuit diagrams, the book describes the protection principles of each element of the power system network, including relay design and settings. It also covers digital/ numerical relaying schemes, theories of the circuit breaking phenomenon and the construction and working of switchgears.
New to the Second Edition
• Three new chapters —Chapter 18- Smart Grid Technologies and Applications, Chapter 19 - Symmetrical and Unsymmetrical Faults in Power Systems and Chapter 20 - Basic Concept and Application of Controlled Switching.
• New sections on topics such as: numerical relays, static differential and static distance relays, types of digital filters, time grading and current grading of overcurrent relays, earthing transformer, comparison between impedance, reactance and mho relay, grid integration of renewable energy sources (res), selection of circuit breakers, phasor measurement unit, etc.
• Discussion on various technical challenges due to integration of renewable energy sources with the existing grid.
• As many as 120 Additional Multiple Choice Questions along with answers introduced as a separate section at the end of the book.
• MATLAB codes for LINKNET structure and primary back-up relay pairs.
