Le particelle di combustibile isotropico tristrutturale sono state originariamente sviluppate in Germania per i reattori raffreddati a gas ad alta temperatura e sono considerate il design del combustibile da scegliere per la prossima generazione di reattori nucleari. Il suo design consiste in un nocciolo di combustibile di UOx rivestito da diversi strati con funzioni diverse. Una di queste funzioni è un guscio di contenimento/barriera di diffusione per i frammenti di fissione, il carbonio pirolitico. Questo materiale non offre una barriera perfetta, a causa della sua struttura cristallina intrinseca, simile alla grafite e quindi impossibile da modellare in un foglio continuo intorno alla sfera di combustibile. I confini del piano consentono la diffusione dei frammenti a una velocità molto più elevata rispetto a quella che avviene attraverso il piano. In questo studio abbiamo analizzato la possibilità di sostituire il carbonio pirolitico con il GPC. Abbiamo studiato l'evoluzione delle proprietà fisiche e della struttura in funzione dell'ambiente di radiazione in cui sono stati esposti. La temperatura a cui sono stati tenuti i campioni durante l'irradiazione era simile a quella del nucleo del reattore nucleare di IV generazione ( 1000°C). Una procedura per la produzione di GPC insieme all'esplorazione dell'analisi chimica e fisica della sabbia prima e dopo l'irradiazione.
