Excerpt from Programm des Stadtischen Gymnasiums: An Frankfurt A. M., Ostern 1875

Soviel hiervon genuge für jetzt, ich kehre zuruck zu der idealisirenden Auffassung der Deutschen. Wie kam Tacitus hierzu? Die gewöhnliche, schon oben angedeutete Ant wort lautet: die Unbefriedigtheit mit den römischen Verhältnissen, die Knechtschaft der Kaiserzeit, das Unbehagliche der Uebercultur liess ihn den wohlthuenden Gegensatz dazu in dem Glück, der Freiheit, dem naturgemässen Leben der Germanen finden. Am gesteigertsten findet sich diese Auffassung ausgesprochen in c. 46, wo nach Beschreibung der fast thierischen Bedürfnisslosigkeit der Fenne' Tacitus ihnen folgendes Lob spendet: securi adversus bonn'nes, secnrz' adversus deos rem difficz'llz'mam adsecntz' snnt, ut illis ne vote quidem 0pns esset. In der That ist jene Auffassung in ihren allgemeinen Grundzügen richtig. Nicht beitreten aber kann ich ihr in ihrer speciellen Durchführung bei welcher man behauptet, gerade in übercivilisirten (und oft dazu: in politisch unglücklichen) Zeiten entst ehe jene krankhafte Sucht nach naturgemässen Zustanden, aus welcher heraus des Tacitus Germania eben so gut wie manche weiter unten berührte Erscheinungen des acht zehnten Jahrhunderts zu erklären seien. Bedarf es denn zu der Vorstellung, dass das Glück in der Ferne wohne, dass die Menschen dort besser seien als in der beengenden eigenen Umgebung, wirklich erst der Uebereivilisation und politisch fauler Zustande? Liegt es nicht in der menschlichen Natur überhaupt begründet, ein Glück, welches sie in sich nicht findet, (und kein Mensch ist ja vollkommen glücklich) anderswo zu vermuthen? Woher stammt sonst der zu allen Zeiten vorhandene Glaube an die gute alte Zeit, woher kommen die stets zahlreichen laudatores temporz's acti? Zu allen Zeiten war die Stimmung bekannt, welche in ferner Vergangenheit oder in ferner Zukunft oder in räumlich entlegenen Ländern Menschen und Verhältnisse in idealer Verklärung sieht. Bei phantasiereichen Völkern oder Individuen konnte diese Stimmung sogar auf das poetische Schaffen oft herrlich einwirken. Auch der urkräftige Wandertrieb jugendlicher Völker, ja selbst das Rühmen des m der Ferne Selbsterlebten kann zu dieser Verherrlichung des Entlegenen beitragen. Aber freilich, um auf die gewöhnliche Ansicht zurückzukommen, in Zeiten, welche ganz besonders dazu angethan sind, den Lebenden die Unbehaglichkeit ihres Looses fühlbar zu machen, wird auch jene sehnsüchtige Stimmung eine besondere Kraft und Lebhaftigkeit gewinnen. Man ist in der Regel geneigt, dieselbe dem klassischen Alterthum abzusprechen; man hält sie für romantisch und findet dann, dass die Germania des Tacitus an moderne Empfindungs weise streife. Auf die älteren Quellen dieser Taciteischen Weise ist nur Köpke (s. Und dieser wie ich denke in unrichtiger und auch unvollständiger Weise zurückgegangen. Ich gedenke nun einen historischen Beweis zu liefern, dass durch alle Zeiten des Alter thums hindurch, von Homer bis auf Tacitus, die Idealisirung der Naturvölker des entlegenen Nordens, sogar genauerer Kenntniss zum Trotz, stattfand; und wenn sie auch bei Tacitus quantitativ am stärksten erscheint, so ist sie doch in einer grossen Zahl von Autoren aller Zeiten deutlich zu erkennen, welche wir nun in diesem Zusammenhang betrachten wollen.
