Excerpt from Programm des Städtischen Gymnasiums zu Frankfurt A. M., Ostern, 1876

In das Jahr 1843 fällt noch eine Aeusserung von Boeckh, denn ich vermuths, dass das folgende Citat, welches ich an seiner Stelle nicht nachsehen konnte, sich in der Ausgabe von diesem Jahre findet. In seiner edit. Antig. P. 212 definirt er die Ate kurz und trefl'end mit den Worten: 'ueberhaupt ist iin; gewöhnlich Verderben oder verderbender Frevel, selten bloss Frevel (schuld) Minder zutrefl'end izt ein Ausspruch von Lübker, welcher in seiner Scphocl. Theologie und Ethik vom Jahre 1851 S. 55 bemerkt: 'nicht minder ist fern von der eigenthümlichen home rischen Auffassung, geradezu die einfache Bezeichnung des Unglücks, wenn auch stets mit dem Nebenbegrifl' irgend welcher Verschuldung verbunden'. Freilich ist 'unglück' ein viel zu vager Aus druck für das, was die Ate bedeutet, dennoch muss auch diese Erklärung als ein Fortschritt bezeichnet werden, weil Lübker damit ausdrücklich den Gegensatz zwischen Homer und den Tragikern betont. Viel bedeutender aber ist für die Bestimmung des aeschyleischen Gebrauchs der Ate eine Abhandlung von Scherer aus dem Jahre 1858 de Graecorum d'n;g notions et indcle. Scherer hat, darin erkennen wir den Kern seiner Auffassung, das Wesentliche aus der Vorstellung von dem auf den Be griff der Ein; übertragen. Das zeigt sich sofort aus folgendem Ausspruch auf S. 33: 'ex tragiccrum sententia unius hominis immcdicum studium atque insclentia non in ipsc tantum pwwit14r, immo vom in posteros poena protenditur, qui ob patrum delicta, quamvis insontes ipsi apparéant, communi gentis interitui obnoxii flunt. Ham familiae cuiusdam (in; est, et pr0pria eine apud tragicos natura cernitur propogaiiow, ita ut propter vetus quoddam flagitium nova semper pcsteris oriatur calamitas, dum expiatum tandem illud est. Man erkennt hierin die wesentlichsten Bestandtheile des Alastor bei Naegelsbach wieder und zugleich den Gedanken, welchen Aeschylus in den Eam. 934 ausspricht: ni: ya'ro npotfgmv einlaznumi vw und; tédö' sc. 'naiag &naiyeu Diese calamitas grmdis promgatn'one conspicua et totan familiam cpprimens, von welcher Scherer spricht, wird aus keiner ethischen Bo thörung hergeleitet, durch keine OsoÃ?loiÃ?ew vermittelt, durch keinen erblichen Frevehinn hervorge rufen, sondern S. 38 ea: sua natura perdere pergit, dum expiata flagitia sunt, quae cam evocarunt. Die fin; ist das Unheil, welches der Frevel eines Ahnen naturgemäss nach sich zieht. Daher steht auch das Opfer in Aulis in keinem innern Connor zu dem Kindermord des Atreus, aber die Opferung der Iphigenia wird eine Handhabe für die Rachepläne des Aegisth, welcher an Agmemncn die That des Atreus sühnen will. Scherer hat zuerst die Person des Aegisth nach Gebühr und mit Recht in den Vordergrund gestellt. Aegisth verkörpert den Alastor, denn er vermittelt die fing. Darin erkennen wir das grösste Verdienst dieser Schrift, denn ofl'enbar ist dies die Meinung des Aeschylus. Was aber seine Auflassung von der Ate anbetrifft, so können wir ihr den Preis nicht zuerkennen, weil jene calamitas esse propagans, d. H. Nach Scherers Auffassung ein damnum illatum nur einseitig die Folgen der Ate betont und daher den 'ganzen Umfang des Begrifl's kaum zur Hälfte berührt. Dennoch müssen seiner Auffassung gegenüber die Untersuchungen aus den folgenden Jahren als ein Rück; schritt bezeichnet werden. Denn auch die in vieler Hinsicht verdicnstvollc Programmschrift von Planck °über den Gnmdgedanken des Aesch. Ulm 1859, vgl. Dazu die Recension von Weck lein Philol. Bd. 34 S. 344, hat uns gerade in ihrer Betrachtung der Ate am wenigsten befriedigt. N aegelsbach hatte, wie oben gezeigt wurde, das Opfer in Aulis zu dem thyesteischemmahl in einen äusseren Connor gestellt, weil Artemis als Beschützerin der Kinder zur Sühne das Opfer der Iphi genia fordere. Dabei hatte er die Schuldfrage nicht befriedigend gelöst. His rvcn
