Der theoretischer Hintergrund wird beschrieben und an einem Beispiel dargelegt. Was macht ein gutes Design aus? Diese Frage wurde unter anderem von Dieter Rams während seiner Zeit bei Braun untersucht, sein Ergebnis waren die 10 Thesen für gutes Design. Aber wie nehmen wir Produkte, nicht nur auf ihrer physischen und praktischen Ebene, sondern auch auf ihrer theoretischen und psychologischen Ebene war? Die grundlegende Annahme, welche sich in den Vordergrund drängt ist, dass wir uns offensichtlich alle über Produkte unterhalten und jeder auch eine (mehr oder weniger) eigene Meinung zu diesen Produkten bildet. Jedoch ist es bei der Diskussion über Produkte gleichzusetzen, wie bei der Kommunikation: um uns gegenseitig zu verstehen, müssen wir die gleiche Sprache sprechen. Die Frage ist, wo fängt man an nach einer solchen Sprache zu suchen, in einer Disziplin, die versucht sich wortlos, unsichtbar, sozusagen pantomimisch zu erklären? Ein Beispiel dazu: Ein Designer kann selbstverständlich ein hochqualitatives Produkt schaffen, indem er weiß wie er in der frühen Phase mit Stift und Papier umzugehen hat, die CAD-Tools für Class-A stetige Oberflächen nutzt und Kenntnisse über die verwendeten Materialien und den angewandten Produktionstechniken hat. Jedoch greifen die meisten Designer bei der Frage: Warum hat das Ergebnis jetzt diese Form? auf die bedeutungslosen, aber dennoch gängigen Worthülsen wie: Um Spannung zu erzeugen. oder Damit die Marke Ihres Hauses widergespiegelt wird. zurück, nur um sich den unangenehmen Fragen bzw. ihren Antworten nicht stellen zu müssen.
