A fost o perioada cand opera lui Ion Luca Caragiale se identifica perfect cu societatea romaneasca de dupa Revoluta din Decembrie 1989. Acum, acea perioada a trecut. De catva ani, capodopera universala a lui Franz Kafka, Procesul, unul din cele mai importante romane ale secolului XX scris in 1914, se identifica mult mai bine ca atmosfera si percepte. Procesul poate fi considerat drept un studiu despre puterea politica, o parabola religioasa pesimista, sau un roman politist. Este povestea de cosmar a unui functionar de banca respectabil care este brusc si inexplicabil arestat si trebuie sa se apere singur impotriva unei acuzatii despre care el nu poate obtine nicio informatie. Confruntat cu aceasta situatie ambigua dar amenintatoare, cedeaza treptat sub presiunea psihologica. Indiferent daca a fost citit ca o poveste existentiala, o parabola, sau o profetie a exceselor birocratiei moderne vecina cu nebunia totalitarismului, cosmarul kafkian a rezonat cu realitatea cruda pentru toate generatiile de cititori. Una dintre figurile iconice ale literaturii lumii moderne, Kafka vorbeste aici despre problemele universale de vinovatie, responsabilitate, si libertate. Despre conditia umana care arunca un individ izolat intr-un sistem impersonal, ilogic, si ridica probleme provocatoare, tot mai relevante, cu privire la rolul guvernului si natura justitiei.
About the Author: Franz Kafka (3 iulie 1883 - 3 iunie 1924) a fost un scriitor de limba germana de romane si nuvele, considerate de critici ca fiind unul dintre autorii cei mai influenti ai secolului XX. In cele mai multe dintre lucrarile lui, cum ar fi Die Verwandlung (Metamorfoze), Der Process (Procesul), si Das Schloss (Castelul), se regasesc temele si arhetipurile de alienare, brutalitatea fizica si psihologica, conflictul dintre parinte si copil, caractere intr-o cautare terifianta, labirinturi de birocratie, si transformari mistice. Kafka s-a nascut intr-o familie de evrei de limba germana, din clasa de mijloc din Praga, capitala Regatului Boemiei, atunci parte a Imperiului Austro-Ungar. In timpul vietii sale, cea mai mare parte a populatiei din Praga vorbea limba ceha, iar diviziunea dintre cehi si persoanele de limba germana era o realitate tangibila, ambele grupuri consolidandu-si identitatea lor nationala. Comunitatea evreiasca s-a aflat de multe ori in intre cele doua sentimente, ridicand in mod natural intrebari legate de locul din care face parte. Kafka insusi a fost fluent in ambele limbi, avand in vedere germana mamei sale. Kafka s-a instruit ca avocat si, dupa terminarea studiilor juridice, a obtinut un loc de munca la o companie de asigurari. A inceput sa scrie povestiri scurte, in timpul sau liber. A avut o relatie complicata si tulbure cu tatal sau, care a avut un efect major asupra scrierilor sale. El a suferit, de asemenea, ca era evreu, simtind ca nu apartine sentimental acestei lumi, desi criticii sustin ca aceasta apartenenta i-a influentat scrisul. Doar cateva dintre lucrarile lui Kafka au fost publicate in timpul vietii sale. Lucrari neterminate ale lui Kafka, inclusiv romanele sale Der Process, Das Schloss si America (de asemenea cunoscut sub numele de Der Verschollene, Omul care a disparut), au fost publicate postum, cea mai mare parte de catre prietenul sau Max Brod, care a ignorat dorinta lui Kafka de a distruge manuscrisele. Albert Camus, Gabriel García Márquez si Jean-Paul Sartre sunt printre scriitorii influentati de munca lui Kafka. Termenul kafkian a intrat in vorbirea curenta pentru a descrie situatii existentiale precum cele din scrierile sale.
