Excerpt from Proceedings of the One Hundred and Thirty-Eighth Annual Convention of the United Evangelical Lutheran Synod of North Carolina: Held in St. Andrews Lutheran Church, With Lenoir Rhyne College Acting as Joint Host, Hickory, North Carolina, June 3rd-5th, 1942

Under the providences Of Almighty God we have met together in the One Hundred and Thirty Eighth Annual Convention Of our beloved Synod. During the past year two Of our esteemed ministerial brethren, Rev. V. C. Ridenhour, D. D, and Rev. W. A. Lutz, were called to heavenly rest. Also, during the same time, death invaded the homes Of a number Of others Of our pastors and laity.

We are meeting for the third consecutive year as the guests Of Lenoir Rhyne college and St. Andrews Church, which is an assurance Of our deep appreciations for the hospitality accorded us by President Monroe and the College and by Dr. F. P. Cauble and his Congregation, and we are sure that our: fellowship together here this year again will be most enjoyable.

The year just closed has been one of the best in our history. While we have come short in many particulars, at the same tim'e we should feel encouraged over the progress which has marked our efforts. There has been a healthy, gain in baptized, confirmed, and communion members, but a falling Off will be noted in the Sunday School enrollment. This has been our best year in the total payment Of apportioned benevolence, with 153 congregations on the paid in full list, and the remaining 11 all showing substantial payments. Two Of the Conferences, the Western and the Nor, thern have paid in excess Of their assignments, with all their congregations on the paid up roll.
