About the Book

This volume is the first one in a peer-reviewed series of Proceedings Volumes from the Calgary History of Medicine Days conferences, which are now produced with Cambridge Scholars Publishing. The History of Medicine Days are two-day Nation-wide conferences held annually in spring at the University of Calgary (Canada), where undergraduate and early graduate students from across Canada, the United States, United Kingdom and Europe give paper and poster presentations on a wide variety of topics from the history of medicine and health care. The selected 2009 conference papers that are assembled in this volume, particularly comprise the history of Ancient Medicine, Canadiana, Eugenics, Military Medicine, Public Health, Surgery, Diseases, as well as Sex and Gender perspectives. Distinguished Professor of Biology and Chair of the History of Biology Program at Washington University in St. Louis (USA), Dr. Garland E. Allen, held the 2009 keynote address at the conference. His topic Evolution, Genetics and Eugenics: The Misuse of Biological Theory, 1900-1945 was largely based on an earlier article in the scholarly journal Endeavour. With the permission of the author and editors-in-chief of Endeavour, this article could be reprinted in the current volume where it represents the 2009 keynote address. This volume also includes the abstracts of all 2009 conference presentations and is well-illustrated with diagrams and images pertaining to the history of medicine.
About the Author: Lisa Petermann (nee Grant) is the Director of the Knowledge Exchange Centre - Mental Health Commission of Canada, as well as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Medical History in the Department of Community Health Sciences at the University of Calgary. She received her PhD in History of Medicine (2007) from the Wellcome Centre for the History of Medicine, University of Warwick (England) with a thesis titled From a Cough to a Coffin: The Child's Medical Encounter in England and France, 1762-1882. Her dissertation was supervised by French historian Professor Colin Jones and medical historian Professor Hilary Marland. Kerry (Sheng-) Sun is a Project Research Assistant in the Calgary History of Medicine and Health Care Program and a Final-Year History Honours Student in the Bachelor of Arts Program at the University of Toronto (Ontario). In addition to history of medicine in the 19th and 20th centuries, he has a strong interest in the intersection of social history with political science, while historically researching the development of international relations (USA, Europe and Japan) during the period of 1815 and 1945. Frank W. Stahnisch is an Associate Professor with joint appointment in the Department of Community Health Sciences and Department of History at the University of Calgary, where he also holds the AMF/Hannah Professorship in the History of Medicine and Health Care. He is the author of Ideas in Action (2003); co-editor (with Florian Steger) of Medizin, Geschichte und Geschlecht (2005); co-editor (with Ulrich Schoenherr and Antonio Bergua) of Albert Neissers 'Stereoscopischer Medicinischer Atlas' (2006); co-editor (with Heijko Bauer) of Bild und Gestalt (2007), and co-editor (with Sylwia Werner and Claus Zittel) of Ludwik Fleck - Denkstile und Tatsachen: Gesammelte Schriften und Zeugnisse (2011).
