About the Book

Heinrich von Kleist war ein Schriftsteller, der mit seiner Literatur provozieren wollte. Die oftmals schwachen männlichen Charaktere in seinen Werken und, diesen entgegen gestellt, die starken weiblichen Protagonistinnen konterkarierten die damalige Sicht auf die Geschlechter. Deswegen ist es nicht erstaunlich, dass seine Werke sowohl von vielen seiner damaligen Kollegen als auch vom Publikum und der Leserschaft empört zurückgewiesen wurden. Doch dies ist nur ein Punkt unter vielen, mit denen Kleist (negatives) Aufsehen erregte. Woher kam also das Desinteresse an seinen Werken? Dies kann auf verschiedene Punkte zurückgeführt werden. Zum einen griff Kleist oftmals die Theorien damaliger Philosophen wie Jean Jacques Rousseau, Immanuel Kant und Johann Gottlieb Fichte auf und verarbeitete diese in überspitzter Weise in seinen Werken. Zum anderen ist Kleists Distanz zu den großen literarischen Strömungen seiner Zeit zu betrachten. Seinen Charakteren fehlt oftmals die Vernunft der Aufklärung, die Moral der Klassik oder das harmonisierte Weltbild der Romantik. Kleists Auseinandersetzung mit den Themen Familie, Frau und Mann wird insbesondere von der Philosophie Johann Gottlieb Fichtes untermauert. Denn Kleists Charaktere weisen häufig Identifikationsprobleme mit den gesellschaftlichen Rollen auf, die sich damals durchzusetzen begannen und mit Fichtes Vorstellungen von der Geschlechterverteilung überlappen. Dieses Buch untersucht daher den Einfluss der Familien- und Geschlechterbilder von Johann Gottlieb Fichte auf Kleists Werke, und insbesondere auf die oftmals tragischen Ausgänge seiner Erzählungen und Dramen. Exemplarisch werden dazu die Werke "Die Marquise von O...", "Der Findling", "Die Verlobung in St. Domingo", "Penthesilea" und "Michael Kohlhaas" betrachtet.
