"Comunidad", núcleo teórico e hilo conductor de este trabajo, es el nombre de un problema común a toda una época de Occidente cuyos límites apenas hoy comenzamos a vislumbrar; una época donde el sentido de la vida en común, que durante siglos había constituido una evidencia, aparece como lo menos evidente del mundo. Acaso cabe preguntarse si esa época todavía puede ser considerada la nuestra. A decir verdad nada es menos seguro. Y sin embargo es preciso constatar que el problema de la comunidad sigue siendo el nuestro.
El propósito de este libro es analizar las teorías sociológicas clásicas de la comunidad. En particular, aquellas que más han contribuido a delimitar y estabilizar el sentido de lo que en la actualidad se entiende por comunidad, y cuya influencia continúa siendo patente en una variedad de discursos del presente. Para ello nos servimos de una serie de textos más o menos conocidos de tres autores "clásicos", como suele decirse, del pensamiento sociológico: Karl Marx, Ferdinand Tönnies y Max Weber. Fundamentalmente, nos abocamos aquí a aquellos textos que mejor ilustran sus planteos sobre el problema en cuestión y donde a su vez intentamos dar a leer una serie de afinidades y correspondencias no siempre reconocidas entre sus respectivas teorías. Pues pese a las diferencias incontestables entre estos autores, sus aproximaciones al motivo de la comunidad remiten en lo esencial a una misma configuración histórico-conceptual.

Daniel Alvaro es Doctor en Ciencias Sociales por la Universidad de Buenos Aires y Doctor en Filosofía por la Université de Paris 8 Vincennes-Saint-Denis. Es investigador del Conicet y profesor de la materia "Teoría Estética y Teoría Política" perteneciente a la carrera de Sociología en la Universidad de Buenos Aires.
