About the Book

"Probing Darkness Finding Light" is a novel, a fable and a mystery interwoven into one man's story. That man is Walt. Yet it may be Everyman's story, for who hasn't wondered who he is, where he is going and what is the purpose of life?

Walt dreams that he embarks on a quest to find answers: Who am I? He encounters portals, doors that lead him to discover what matters in his life. Inside other doors he is faced with exotic temptations.

Entering a vast mountain range, Walt sees a mountain trail. Looking up, he makes out glimmers of light and begins to understand that answers to his quest may lie at the peak. He struggles up the mountain trail, rejecting offerings by zealots and promoters, until he reaches a sanctuary at the top.

Walt meets a hooded monk, Namey. There in the monastic refuge, Walt and Namey have daily conversations, probing values and beliefs.

In time, Namey guides Walt to dare to delve into his soul for answers to questions that plague him. When Walt responds, he finds his answers.

Eager to return home, Walt descends the mountain trail when a violent storm erupts. A terrible accident occurs.
About the Author: While I romped around the neighborhood with the other kids in Morristown, New Jersey in the 1930s, my dad sold shoes for a living. Mom helped him, and they barely survived the harsh economic times. The Great Depression restricted our opportunities and our ambitions. I aspired to become an office worker one day. My high school faculty advisor insisted that I set my sights on college. After graduation, I matriculated at Rutgers University and was awarded a scholarship. After a couple of years Pearl Harbor intervened and I volunteered. I served four years, mostly in New Guinea and the Philippines combat zones, and was honorably discharged from the army as Sgt. Needell. Back to college for a few months, medical school (class of 1950) courtesy of the GI Bill, internship, residency, and fellowship, I settled in Miami to practice urology. I married Elaine, a pretty medical school classmate who became a specialist in internal medicine and subsequently in adolescent psychiatry. We both taught as full clinical professors in our respective fields at the University of Miami Medical School. Eventually we had two sons and two daughters, Bill, Jim, Barb, and Nancy, all of whom became doctors, got married and had children of their own, seven by my last count. Every summer for six weeks we were campers, the whole family sleeping on the ground and hiking in each of the 50 states. We still love the outdoors. My medical practice thrived, and my two partners, Dr. Larry Winton and Dr. Richard L. Fein, and I still keep in touch with one another. They willingly cooperated when I took leaves of absence from our practice to do voluntary medical missionary service in Africa, Central America, South America, India, and New Guinea. Customarily, I worked in medically underserved locations for two months each year. One of the greatest honors of my career is that I performed surgery at Dr. Albert Schweitzer's hospital in Lambaréne, Gabon at his invitation. After retirement from medicine I was accepted to Yale University as a major in philosophy and graduated cum laude at age 64 with a bachelor's degree in 1988. I completed my graduate studies in philosophy at Georgetown University, earning a master's degree in 1991. I live with my bride of 62 years-yes, my bride, which is what I call her every day and which she loves to hear me call her-in an upscale old age home and can't get through my head that this is where I'm supposed to be.
