Lange Zeit galt die variable Vergütung von Managern als unantastbar, da mit einer leistungsabhängigen Entlohnung der Gedanke einhergeht, dass Manager dann im Sinne der Aktionäre/Unternehmenseigner handeln. Aufgrund dessen sollten Manager nicht wie Bürokraten bezahlt werden, sondern nach ihrer Leistung, ähnlich wie Leistungssportler. Je mehr Leistung erbracht wird, umso höher ist das Gehalt. Allerdings ergeben sich daraus etwaige Probleme. Der umstrittene Leistungsbegriff wirft hierbei eines der größten Dilemmata auf. Häufig kann eine Leistung nicht nur einer Person und deren Performanz zugerechnet werden. Vielmehr stehen viele Individuen hinter einer Leistung, jedoch erhält nur eine Person die finanziellen Boni. Weiterhin ist der sogenannte Crowding-Out-Effect nicht zu vernachlässigen. Hiermit ist gemeint, dass die intrinsische Motivation durch externe Belohnungen abgeschwächt oder sogar gänzlich ausgelöscht wird. Dies kann wiederum zur Folge haben, dass Unternehmensverantwortlich nur noch den Blick zum Geld haben und entgegen dem Wohl aller, also für das Unternehmen, egoistisch und opportunistisch handeln (vgl. Beck 2008). Beim Nachgehen der Frage nach einer angemessenen Managervergütung, kann die Agenturtheorie Hinweise und Erklärungsmodelle geben, weswegen sie Thema dieser Hausarbeit ist.
