About the Book

Lord Grenville asks Alfred Gordon to come out of retirement and return to active service because an old acquaintance of the British secret services has turned up in London. He is meeting scientists, geographers and explorers and has even had himself circumcised. And it is all being financed by the Spanish government. Gordon wonders what he could be after. Domingo Badia leaves London disguised as Ali Bey. He crosses the Strait of Gibraltar and carries out the plan he proposed to Godoy, the Spanish Prime Minister: conquering Morocco for the Kingdom of Spain because Sultan Slimane refuses to sell the country cereal. All of North Africa would come under Spanish control. In the midst of all the changes taking place, with the French Revolution and the rise of Napoleon, the British Crown loses one of its largest colonies and the United States of America comes into existence, looking set to be a great power. Meanwhile war in Europe brings a major defeat for the Spanish Empire by Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar. An incredible adventure begins and the world witnesses the birth of one of history's greatest legends: Prince Ali Bey. Who was Ali Bey? A conspirator, a spy, a scientist, an adventurer, an explorer, a swindler, a parasite or a polygamist? Or maybe all of them at the same time? Or perhaps a mystery that no one has been able to solve? With a humorous take on the story, Albert Salvadó solves the Enigma and presents the second part of his trilogy The Shadow of Ali Bey.
About the Author: I borned in Andorra la Vella (1951, Principality of Andorra). Andorra is one of the smallest countries in the word. The country, in the middle of the Pyrenees (between France and Spain), in winter is covered with snow and the national sport is skiing. We are the little Switzerland. I'm industrial engineer and writer. I live at 4500 feets high, in a house in the woods, where I write my books. I've writen children's stories, essays and novels. I'm particularly known for my historical novels. In crime fiction, I have written "El rapto, el muerto y el Marsellés," Black Series Prize in 2000, and "Una vida en juego," dedicated to the Casino of Rabassada (1910). In anticipation novel I have written "Un voto por la esperanza," a novel that won the title of "Work Chosen" in the I International Novel Prize in 1985 Plaza & Janes, and "El informe Phaeton" which has won the unanimous applause of the public, that says this is my most impressive novel. In historical fiction, my specialty, I have written of all ages: "The master of Cheops" Néstor Luján Prize Historical Novel 1998, "El anillo de Atila" Fiter i Rossell Prize 1999, "Los ojos de Aníbal" Charlemagne Prize 2002, "La Gran Concubina de Egipto" Nestor Lujan Prize 2005, the trilogy dedicated to James I the Conqueror (2000) composed of: "El puñal del sarraceno," "La reina húngara" and "Hablad o matdame," the trilogy dedicated to Ali Bey composed of: "Maldito catalán,""Maldito musulmán" and "Maldito cristiano" and my last novel "Abre los ojos y despierta." I love to mix reality, fiction and mystery with exquisite subtlety, that always wrap by feelings. I have books published into several languages: Catalan, Spanish, English, French, Portuguese, Greek, Slovak, Czech ... I'm regarded as having breathed new life into the historical novel in the Catalan language. I'm very happy for this title.
