Das Land, das bekannt ist für Pizza, Pasta und Prosecco. Die Presse der Halbinsel dagegen ist nicht in aller Munde - höchstens das Fernsehen geriet vor allem wegen Medienmogul und Ex-Ministerpräsident Silvio Berlusconi international in die Schlagzeilen. In dieser Arbeit wird das Pressesystem Italiens untersucht und veranschaulicht. Die Analyse beruft sich dabei auf die Theorie von Hallin und Mancini, die Italien dem so genannten polarisiert pluralistischem Modell zugeordnet haben. Dieses Modell vereint die südlichen Länder Europas unter sich, von denen die Autoren behaupten, sie hätten unter anderem folgende Gemeinsamkeiten: Eine elitäre und wenig objektive Presse, die teils noch vom Staat kontrolliert und zu instrumentalisieren versucht wird und die sich nur an eine sehr kleine Leserschaft wendet. Diese Arbeit zeigt, ob die genannten Hypothesen auf die Presse Italiens zutreffen. Zunächst wird dargestellt, wie der Journalismus in Italien entstand und worauf Aspekte, die dort auch heute noch vorzufinden sind, zurückzuführen sind. Anschließend wird auf die Organisation und Struktur der Presse eingegangen: wem sie gehört, wie sie finanziert wird und wie dies im Zusammenhang steht mit dem Gesicht der italienischen Presselandschaft. Am Ende wird ein Blick auf die Leserschaft geworfen und untersucht, wen die italienische Presse anspricht und wie verbreitet sie ist. An dieser Stelle wird eine aktuelle Entwicklung näher analysiert werden, nämlich ob die Auflagenzahl erhöht wurde, als die Zeitungen nicht mehr nur in den Zeitungskiosken, sondern auch an anderen Stellen verkauft werden durften. Der Schwerpunkt des Werkes liegt auf der nationalen Tagespresse.
